Chapter 14: What My Mother Left Behind

The sun had barely risen when we walked into the backyard.

The same backyard where tomorrow’s engagement party was supposed to happen.

The same place where flowers had been planned.

Where music was supposed to play.

Instead, we stood around an old oak tree with shovels in our hands.

Life had a strange way of changing overnight.

Ethan stood beside me.

“You okay?””

I looked at the tree.

“No.””

He nodded.

“Fair answer.””

A small smile appeared on my face.

The first one in hours.

“You’re still here.””

He looked at me.

“Of course I am.””

I swallowed.

“Even after everything?””

He took my hand.

“Especially after everything.””

My father started digging.

Daniel stood a few feet away.

Still a stranger.

Still my biological father.

A man I didn’t know how to feel about.

But when I saw him looking at the tree, I noticed something.

He wasn’t looking at the past.

He was grieving it.

After twenty minutes, the shovel hit something hard.

My father stopped.

Everyone froze.

He carefully moved the dirt away.

A small metal container appeared.

My hands began shaking.

Inside was a notebook.

A flash drive.

And another letter.

My father picked up the letter.

But this time, he didn’t open it.

He handed it to me.

“You should.””

I sat beneath the tree.

I opened it.

My Emily,

The words blurred immediately.

I wiped my eyes.

If you are reading this, then you finally know the truth I tried to protect you from.

I continued.

I want you to understand something. There were people who loved you. There were also people who wanted to use you.

My fingers tightened.

The hardest thing I ever did was choose who to trust.

I looked at Daniel.

Then Robert.

Then Patricia.

Robert loved you like his own child before he ever knew he wasn’t your biological father.

My father looked away.

Daniel loved you, but he was young and afraid. Love without courage can still cause pain.

Daniel lowered his head.

Then I reached the part that made my heart stop.

But Victor was different.

I looked at Patricia.

Victor did not love. He controlled.

The letter continued.

He discovered my secret. He discovered Daniel existed. He discovered Robert was not your biological father.

My breathing became shallow.

He planned to use that information against all of us.

I turned the page.

The handwriting became messier.

The night I died, I was going to the police.

Nobody spoke.

I had proof.

I looked at the flash drive.

There it was.

The proof.

My mother’s final evidence.

Ethan carefully opened the files on his laptop.

A video appeared.

My mother.

Alive.

Sitting at a desk.

My heart broke seeing her.

“Emily,” she said.

I covered my mouth.

“If you are watching this, something happened to me.””

The video shook slightly.

“I need you to know Victor Hale was responsible for the threats.””

Patricia started crying.

My mother continued.

“But Victor did not act alone.””

The room froze.

I leaned closer.

“There was someone helping him.””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Someone inside my family.””

I looked around.

The video continued.

“They helped him access information. They helped him track my movements.””

My heart raced.

Then my mother said the sentence that changed everything.

“The person helping Victor was not Robert.””

My father closed his eyes.

A tear fell.

“But it was someone Robert trusted.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel looked at Patricia.

“You knew.””

Patricia shook her head.

“No.””

But Daniel pointed at the screen.

“Your handwriting is on the documents.””

Everyone turned.

Patricia looked at the laptop.

And collapsed.

“No…”

I stared.

“What?””

Ethan zoomed in.

There were scanned documents.

Approvals.

Signatures.

And at the bottom…

Patricia’s name.

My stepmother whispered:

“I didn’t know what I was signing.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You helped him.””

She started sobbing.

“I thought I was helping my husband.””

My father went still.

“Victor told you?””

She nodded.

“He said he needed information about Emily to protect us.””

I stared at her.

“You helped the man who hurt my mother.””

Patricia looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

Then the laptop made a sound.

A new file appeared.

One that none of us had opened.

The title was simple.

May you like

Final confession.

And the date was the day my mother died.
