Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew My Secret
The unknown phone sat on the kitchen table like a bomb.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed.
The message remained glowing on the screen.
Tell Emily the truth before I do.
My father looked at Patricia.
“You know who sent this.””
It wasn’t a question.
Patricia looked away.
That was answer enough.
I felt something inside me break.
“How many people have known about me?””
Nobody answered.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“My whole life has been a conversation everyone had except me.””
My father stepped forward.
“Emily—”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“I need the truth.””
He stopped.
For years, Robert Carter had been the person I trusted most in the world.
But now every memory had a shadow.
Every family photo had a secret behind it.
The man who taught me to drive.
The man who walked me home from school.
The man who called me his daughter.
Had known I wasn’t biologically his.
And never told me.
My phone buzzed.
This time, everyone looked at me.
It was Ethan.
I answered immediately.
“Ethan?””
His voice sounded tense.
“Emily, where are you?””
“At home.””
“Are you alone?””
I looked around the kitchen.
“No.””
There was a pause.
“Then listen carefully. Don’t tell anyone I called.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“Emily, I found something in your father’s old files.””
I looked at Robert.
He noticed.
“What did Ethan find?””
I ignored him.
“What kind of files?””
Ethan took a breath.
“Documents from before you were born.””
My heart started pounding.
“Why were you looking through those?””
“Because your father asked me to.””
I turned toward my father.
“You asked Ethan?””
Robert looked guilty.
“I wanted him to understand.””
“Understand what?””
Ethan answered.
“Your biological father’s name.””
The room went silent.
I closed my eyes.
“Tell me.””
Nobody moved.
Not Patricia.
Not my father.
Not Madison.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“His name was Daniel Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But it clearly meant something to my father.
Because Robert immediately sat down.
Patricia covered her mouth.
Madison looked between them.
“Who is Daniel?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at my father.
“Dad?””
He stared at the floor.
“Daniel wasn’t just your biological father.””
I waited.
“What does that mean?””
His voice was barely audible.
“He was my best friend.””
The words landed like a punch.
My father continued.
“Before your mother and I got married, Daniel was part of our lives.””
I felt sick.
“So everyone knew him?””
“Yes.””
“Did he know about me?””
Robert looked away.
“Yes.””
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“Then why wasn’t he in my life?””
Silence.
The kind of silence that told me the answer was painful.
Finally Patricia spoke.
“Because he disappeared.””
I looked at her.
“Disappeared?””
She nodded.
“After your mother told him she was keeping you.””
“Keeping me?””
The words sounded strange.
Like I was an object being passed around.
“She chose Robert,” Patricia said softly.
I looked at my father.
“She chose you.””
He nodded.
“She did.””
“Then why did Daniel disappear?””
Nobody answered.
Then Madison spoke.
“He didn’t disappear.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Her face had gone pale.
“What did you say?””
She looked nervous.
“I heard Mom talking about him once.””
Patricia immediately stood.
“Madison, stop.””
But Madison continued.
“She said Daniel didn’t leave.””
My father’s voice became sharp.
“Madison.””
“She said he was forced to leave.””
The room froze.
I stared at Patricia.
“What does that mean?””
Patricia looked terrified.
“Nothing.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to say nothing anymore.””
My father looked at Patricia.
“What did you do?””
She shook her head.
“I was trying to protect this family.””
“From what?””
She didn’t answer.
Then Ethan spoke through the phone.
“Emily?””
I brought the phone back to my ear.
“What?””
“There’s one more thing.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“I found a photograph.””
“Of who?””
A pause.
Then Ethan said:
“Your mother, your father, Patricia…”
My heart sank.
“And Daniel.””
I waited.
“Emily, there’s something written on the back.””
My fingers went cold.
“What does it say?””
May you like
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“It says, ‘The night we lost Emily was the night we made our biggest mistake.’”
