Chapter 12: The Truth Daniel Brought Home

Nobody moved.

Daniel stood in the doorway like a ghost from another life.

A life I never knew existed.

My father immediately stepped in front of me.

“You need to leave.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Still protecting her from the truth, Robert?””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to walk back into her life.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I never left because I wanted to.””

I felt anger rise.

“Then why did you?””

His eyes met mine.

And for a moment, I saw something unexpected.

Pain.

“I was told to disappear.””

“By who?””

He looked at Patricia.

Everyone followed his gaze.

Patricia looked like she couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

Daniel stepped inside.

“You know exactly what happened.””

My father’s voice became sharp.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Twenty-two years ago, your mother found out someone was manipulating her medical records.””

I stared.

“What records?””

“Your birth records.””

My hands went cold.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Patricia.

“Because someone wanted Robert listed as your father.””

The room exploded.

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Daniel didn’t stop.

“I was blamed for everything.””

He looked at me.

“Your mother thought I abandoned you.””

I swallowed.

“Didn’t you?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then prove it.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I have proof.””

He reached into his coat.

My father moved immediately.

“What is that?””

Daniel pulled out a folder.

“Everything I collected after your mother died.””

He placed it on the table.

“I spent years trying to find out what happened.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Emails.

Medical reports.

And one photograph.

A photograph of my mother.

Standing outside a hospital.

With someone beside her.

I recognized the person immediately.

Patricia.

My hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your mother met Patricia the day before the accident.””

Patricia closed her eyes.

“I was going to tell her.””

“Tell her what?”” I asked.

Patricia looked at me.

“That Daniel was telling the truth.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

Then Patricia.

Then my father.

“What truth?””

Patricia started crying.

“The accident wasn’t random.””

I felt numb.

“Then what was it?””

She whispered:

“Your mother was leaving.””

“Leaving?””

“Yes.””

“For where?””

Patricia looked at the floor.

“She wanted to take you and start over.””

My father looked devastated.

“She was going to leave me?””

Patricia nodded.

“Because she believed everyone around her had lied.””

I looked at my father.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

Daniel spoke.

“She was going to tell Emily everything when she was older.””

I looked down at the papers.

“So why didn’t she?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel pointed at one document.

“Because the night before she died, she discovered something.””

I picked it up.

A bank record.

A payment.

My eyes widened.

“What is this?””

Daniel looked at Patricia.

“She found out someone had been paying for information about her.””

I stared.

“Who?””

Daniel was silent.

Then he said:

“The payment came from an account connected to someone in this family.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

And slowly said the name.

“Madison’s father.””

I froze.

“What?””

Patricia collapsed into a chair.

“No…”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly the question wasn’t who knew the truth.

The question was why Madison’s family had been hiding it.

And why her father’s name had appeared in a mystery that began before Madison was even born.
