Chapter 11: The Person Nobody Suspected

The paper felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.

I stared at the name.

Then at my father.

Then back at the document.

“Dad?””

He looked at the paper.

And his face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

That scared me more.

“What is this?””

My father sat down.

“I don’t know.””

The answer came too quickly.

“You do.””

He looked at me.

“I swear I don’t.””

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to believe the man who raised me.

But every time I tried, another secret appeared.

Ethan took the paper carefully.

“What does this mean?””

Madison stepped closer.

“I found it hidden behind Mom’s dresser.””

Patricia looked at her daughter.

“You went through my room?””

Madison’s eyes filled with anger.

“Yeah.””

Her voice cracked.

“Because nobody tells me anything either.””

That stopped Patricia.

For once, Madison wasn’t acting like a spoiled teenager.

She looked hurt.

“I spent my whole life watching everyone protect Emily.””

I looked at her.

“That’s not true.””

She laughed sadly.

“Isn’t it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because maybe part of it was true.

My father protected me.

But he also protected secrets.

Madison pointed at the document.

“I found Mom crying over this years ago.””

Patricia whispered:

“Madison.””

“No.””

Madison looked at me.

“She said if anyone ever found out, everything would fall apart.””

I looked at Patricia.

“What would fall apart?””

She sat down slowly.

“Our family.””

I shook my head.

“It already has.””

The words hurt.

But nobody disagreed.

Ethan examined the paper.

“This signature…”

He looked at my father.

“Is yours?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“What did you sign?””

“I don’t remember.””

I stared.

“You don’t remember signing a hospital document?””

His eyes filled.

“It was twenty-two years ago.””

“But you remember everything else?””

He looked away.

And again, I saw fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Ethan flipped the paper over.

“There’s something on the back.””

We all leaned closer.

A handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

Robert knows the truth about the accident.

My father went completely still.

I felt my stomach drop.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“I knew there was something wrong.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“The night your mother died…”

His voice broke.

“I knew it wasn’t just an accident.””

The room went silent.

“Then why did you say it was?””

He looked destroyed.

“Because she asked me to.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

My father looked at the floor.

“Your mother told me if something happened, I had to protect you.””

“From who?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angry.

“You don’t know?””

“She never told me.””

“Why?””

“Because she said knowing too much would put me in danger too.””

I looked around the room.

“So everyone was afraid.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Everyone except me.””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was painful.

Then Patricia suddenly stood.

“I need to show you something.””

She walked upstairs.

A few minutes later, she returned with a small box.

She placed it on the table.

“I kept this because I thought I was protecting Madison.””

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

And one envelope.

Patricia touched it.

“This came three days after your mother died.””

I looked at her.

“From who?””

She didn’t answer.

I opened it.

The first line made my blood run cold.

If you are reading this, then Patricia has finally decided to tell the truth.

I looked up.

Patricia started crying.

The letter continued.

I know what you did.

My hands shook.

I read the next sentence.

And I know why you did it.

I looked at Patricia.

“What did you do?””

She covered her face.

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

Her voice broke.

“I thought I was helping.””

“Helping who?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Your mother.””

Before I could respond, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood in the doorway.

Older than the photos.

But unmistakable.

Daniel Whitmore.

He looked directly at me.

May you like

And said:

“Emily, your father isn’t the only person who lied to you.””
