Chapter 8: The Daughter I Almost Lost

Nobody understood what Sarah had just said.

Not even me.

“What do you mean it’s not Emily?””

Sarah looked terrified.

“The trust documents were changed.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Changed how?””

Sarah looked at him.

“You know something.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I felt anger rising again.

“You came here knowing all of this.””

Richard looked at me.

“I knew there were conditions.””

“Conditions?””

I pointed toward Emily.

“You abandoned her for seventeen years, then came back when paperwork started moving.””

“That’s not why I came.””

Emily looked at him.

“Then why?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

A person can lie with words.

But not with silence.

Emily saw it too.

She looked away.

Sarah grabbed her keys.

“We need to go to the lawyer’s office.””

Nobody argued.

Twenty minutes later, we were sitting in a small office downtown.

The walls were covered with old photographs and framed certificates.

A man in his sixties sat across from us.

Mr. Harris.

My grandmother’s estate lawyer.

He looked uncomfortable.

“I was hoping this meeting would happen under different circumstances.””

Emily sat beside me.

Not beside Richard.

That mattered.

“Please,” she said.

“Tell me the truth.””

Mr. Harris nodded.

“I promised your grandmother I would wait until your eighteenth birthday.””

He opened a file.

“Your grandmother created a trust before you were born.””

Richard leaned forward.

“Exactly.””

Mr. Harris looked at him.

“But you misunderstood something.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

“The trust was never about giving money to Emily.””

Everyone went quiet.

“What was it about?”” Emily asked.

Mr. Harris looked at me.

“It was about protecting her.””

I felt confused.

“Protecting her from what?””

He opened another document.

“From people who might try to use her.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Mr. Harris ignored him.

“Your grandmother knew there was conflict surrounding Emily’s birth. She knew certain people cared more about control than family.””

Emily looked down.

“Was she talking about him?””

Nobody needed to ask who.

Mr. Harris continued.

“She created conditions.””

“What conditions?””

He looked at me.

“The person responsible for managing the trust would be the person who raised Emily with no expectation of financial reward.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning you.””

The room went silent.

Richard laughed.

“That’s impossible.””

Mr. Harris looked at him.

“No. It was very specific.””

He turned pages.

“Michael was selected because your grandmother observed his actions before she ever met him.””

I frowned.

“Before she met me?””

“Yes.””

He pulled out another letter.

“She had someone follow the situation after Emily’s birth.””

Richard looked angry.

“Follow?””

“Yes.””

Mr. Harris looked at me.

“She wanted proof that whoever raised Emily did it because they loved her.””

Emily looked at me.

Her eyes filled.

I looked away.

Because I didn’t need money.

I never did.

Mr. Harris continued.

“The inheritance was designed to be transferred only after Emily turned eighteen.””

Richard interrupted.

“And now?””

“Now the final review has begun.””

Sarah looked nervous.

“What review?””

Mr. Harris closed the folder.

“The review to determine whether Michael fulfilled the agreement.””

I felt numb.

“Agreement?””

He nodded.

“The agreement your father signed.””

My heart stopped.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

Mr. Harris looked at me.

“He named you as the guardian he trusted.””

I stared at the document.

Another piece of my father’s hidden life.

Another secret.

Emily whispered:

“So what happens now?””

Mr. Harris hesitated.

“That depends.””

“On what?””

He looked toward Richard.

“On whether anyone challenges the trust.””

Richard stood.

“I’m challenging it.””

Emily’s face fell.

“You are?””

He looked at her.

“I’m your father. I have rights.””

Mr. Harris calmly gathered the papers.

“Then we will proceed legally.””

Richard smiled.

“Good.””

He looked at me.

“Because once the court sees why Michael was chosen…”

He paused.

“…they’ll ask the same question everyone should have asked years ago.””

I frowned.

“What question?””

Richard walked toward the door.

Then turned.

“Why did your father choose you instead of himself?””

May you like

The door closed behind him.

And for the first time, I wondered the same thing.
