Chapter 6: The Name On The Birth Record
The attic stayed silent for several seconds.
Nobody wanted to say the obvious.
Nobody wanted to finish the sentence.
Emily is not…
Not what?
Not Richard’s daughter?
Not the child we thought she was?
I looked at Sarah.
Her face had lost all color.
“Sarah.””
She didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Emily noticed too.
“Mom?””
Sarah sat down slowly.
“I thought this day would never come.””
Those words made Emily step back.
“What does that mean?””
Sarah covered her face.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“From what?””
The question echoed.
Sarah looked at her daughter.
“From the truth.””
I felt anger rising.
“How many more secrets are there?””
Sarah looked at me.
“I never wanted this.””
“But you let everyone else decide what I deserved to know.””
She looked away.
I immediately regretted the sharpness in my voice.
But the damage was already done.
Emily picked up the torn photograph.
“Who wrote this?””
“Your grandfather,” Sarah whispered.
“My father?””
I nodded.
Emily looked at me.
“Why would your father know something about me?””
I didn’t have an answer.
That was the worst part.
A knock suddenly came from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
Sarah wiped her face.
“I didn’t invite anyone.””
I walked toward the stairs.
A second knock.
Harder.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Michael.””
The fear in her voice brought back a memory.
She was eight years old.
A thunderstorm had knocked out the power.
She had grabbed my hand and whispered the same thing.
“Michael.””
Back then, I promised her nothing bad would happen.
I wanted to promise it again.
But I couldn’t.
Not anymore.
I moved downstairs.
When I opened the front door, Richard was standing there.
He looked at the four of us.
Then his eyes moved to the photograph in Emily’s hand.
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You found it.””
I stepped outside.
“How much did you know?””
Richard smiled.
“I knew you would eventually ask.””
“Answer me.””
He looked past me toward Emily.
“Sweetheart, I think it’s time we talked.””
Emily didn’t move.
“About what?””
Richard sighed.
“About why your mother and Michael have been lying to you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You are unbelievable.””
Richard ignored me.
He reached into his jacket.
And pulled out a document.
Not an old letter.
Not a photograph.
A birth certificate.
Emily saw it.
Her face changed.
“Why do you have that?””
Richard looked at her.
“Because I wanted you to know the truth.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“Richard, don’t do this.””
He smiled.
“Why?””
Then he looked at Emily.
“Because your mother never told you who your biological father really was.””
Emily froze.
The world seemed to stop.
She looked at Sarah.
“Mom?””
Sarah started crying.
“Emily…”
Richard held out the document.
“Read it.””
Emily didn’t take it.
She just stared.
“Who is my father?””
Richard smiled.
And then he said the one thing none of us expected.
“Not the man you think.””
The document shook in his hand.
Emily finally reached for it.
She looked down.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then she whispered:
“This name…”
I stepped closer.
“What name?””
She looked up.
Tears streaming down her face.
“Michael.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
She turned the paper toward me.
At the bottom of the birth record was a name.
A name I had never seen before.
A name that connected everything.
Because it was my father’s name.

And beneath it was one sentence that changed my entire understanding of Emily’s life.
*Father: Unknown at time of birth. Biological records amended seventeen years later.*
