Chapter 7: The Truth Hidden In Blood
The document slipped from Emily’s hands.
It landed on the floor between us.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because sometimes a single piece of paper can destroy everything you thought you understood.
I stared at the birth record.
My father’s name.
A name I had spent years believing belonged only to my past.
A name that now appeared connected to Emily.
“That’s impossible,” I whispered.
Richard watched me carefully.
“You should ask Sarah.””
I turned.
“Sarah?””
She looked like she had aged ten years in a few seconds.
“Michael…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Tell me what this means.””
Emily looked between us.
“Mom?””
Sarah wiped her tears.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“I was waiting for the right time.””
Emily laughed bitterly.
“The right time? I’m eighteen years old, Mom. My biological father came back yesterday.
I found out my stepdad knew my grandfather. And now I’m finding out Michael’s father is somehow on my birth records.””
She pointed at the paper.
“When exactly was the right time?””
Sarah had no answer.
Richard stepped closer.
“Because the truth was always going to come out.””
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“You knew before you came back.””
Richard looked away.
“I knew there were questions.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.””
His expression hardened.
“I came back for my daughter.””
Emily looked at him.
“Did you?””
The question surprised him.
For the first time since he appeared, Richard looked uncertain.
“I’m your father.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Silence.
Emily picked up the document again.
“Why is his name here?””
Sarah sat down on the porch steps.
“Because your grandfather was involved before you were born.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“My father?””
Sarah nodded.
“Your grandfather knew Richard was not ready to be a father.””
Richard scoffed.
“That’s not true.””
Sarah looked at him.
“You left.””
He had no response.
She continued.
“Your grandmother was afraid. She knew Richard was unreliable. She knew Michael’s father had made mistakes in his own life, but she also knew he regretted them.””
I stared at the ground.
My father.
The man who left me with unanswered questions.
The man I thought abandoned everyone.
Had he spent his final years trying to fix something?
Sarah looked at me.
“Your father found out about Emily after she was born.””
I shook my head.
“How?””
“Your grandmother told him.””
My voice lowered.
“And he never told me?””
Sarah looked away.
“He wanted to.””
“But?””
“He was sick.””
That word hit me.
Sick.
The excuse I had heard so many times.
The reason I never got answers.
The reason I never got closure.
Richard crossed his arms.
“This is exactly why I came back.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Because your family kept secrets from everyone.””
I almost laughed.
“You are the last person who gets to complain about secrets.””
His jaw tightened.
“I have a right to know my daughter.””
Emily looked at him.
“Do you?””
Richard froze.
She continued.
“Where were you when I learned to ride a bike?””
He said nothing.
“Where were you when I had the flu for two weeks?””
Nothing.
“Where were you when I got my first award at school?””
His silence became the answer.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“I spent my whole life thinking you left because you had a reason.””
She swallowed.
“But maybe you just left.””
Richard’s face changed.
A flash of guilt.
Then anger.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Emily said.
“I do.””
She looked at me.
“You stayed.””
Those two words almost broke me.
Because after everything, after all the confusion, they were the words I had needed seventeen years ago.
I reached for her hand.
She let me.
Only for a second.
But she let me.
Then Sarah whispered:
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at the attic.
“Your grandmother left another letter.””
Richard’s face changed immediately.
“What letter?””
Sarah noticed.
And so did I.
“You know about it.””
Richard didn’t answer.
I stepped forward.
“What was in that letter?””
He looked at the house.
Then back at us.
“You don’t want to open that.””
Emily tightened her grip on my hand.
“Why?””
Richard looked directly at her.
“Because once you know everything, you can’t pretend your family is the same.””
Emily stared at him.
“I think my family has already changed.””
The silence that followed was broken by Sarah’s phone ringing.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went pale.
“What?””
She answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
Then she covered her mouth.
“No…”
I stood.
“What happened?””
Sarah looked at me.
“It’s the lawyer.””
My heart sank.
“What lawyer?””
She looked toward Emily.
“Your grandmother’s estate lawyer.””
The call continued.
Sarah’s expression became more terrified with every word.
Then she hung up.
“What did he say?””
She looked at Emily.
“He said the trust has been activated.””
I frowned.
“Activated?””
Sarah nodded.
“But there’s a problem.””
Emily stepped closer.
“What problem?””
Sarah whispered:
“The person named as the final beneficiary…”
May you like
She looked at me.
“…is not Emily.””
