Chapter 5: The Man Who Came Back
Nobody spoke.
The attic suddenly felt smaller.
Emily stared at the envelope in my hand.
“Why would Richard write that?””
I looked at Sarah.
She looked as shocked as I was.
“I don’t know.””
But her voice was too quiet.
Too uncertain.
I noticed.
And so did Emily.
“Mom.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“I need to tell you something.””
Emily stepped back.
“Another secret?””
The pain in her voice was impossible to ignore.
Sarah sat down.
“When your father left…”
She stopped.
Emily’s expression hardened.
“Richard.””
“Yes.””
Sarah nodded.
“When Richard left, he didn’t just disappear.””
I felt my hands tighten.
“What do you mean?””
“He contacted my mother.””
Emily looked confused.
“Why?””
Sarah looked at the envelope.
“Because he knew about the inheritance.””
The room went silent.
I remembered Richard’s words.
Money.
Trust.
Control.
Suddenly everything connected.
Emily sat down.
“So he didn’t come back because of me?””
Sarah started crying.
“I don’t know.””
That answer broke something inside Emily.
I could see it.
She had spent years imagining her father returning.
She probably dreamed about the moment.
She probably thought he would explain.
She probably believed he had a reason.
But now she was facing the possibility that his reason was never her.
It was what she had.
I wanted to comfort her.
Every instinct told me to hug her.
But I stayed where I was.
Because yesterday she had stepped away from me.
And I didn’t know if I still had the right.
Emily opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
She read silently.
Then her face went pale.
“What does it say?”” Sarah asked.
Emily didn’t answer.
She handed it to me.
The letter was short.
Sarah,
I know about the agreement between your mother and Michael’s father.
I know who Emily was supposed to be raised by.
I know who controls the trust.
You cannot hide this forever.
I am Emily’s biological father.
I have rights.
Richard.
I looked up.
“He knew.””
Sarah nodded.
“He knew before he left.””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“He abandoned me because of money?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
I stepped closer.
“Emily…”
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, because yesterday I defended him.””
I stayed silent.
“I told everyone he was my real dad.””
A tear fell down her cheek.
“I was so proud of him.””
Sarah hugged her.
Emily didn’t resist.
But she didn’t hug back either.
She just stood there.
Broken.
After a while, Emily looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
She wiped her face.
“You don’t know how horrible I feel.””
I wanted to say I did.
But I didn’t.
Because this wasn’t about my pain anymore.
This was about hers.
“I spent years wondering why he left,” she whispered.
“I know.””
“I thought maybe I wasn’t good enough.””
My heart broke.
“You were four years old.””
“I know.””
Her voice became smaller.
“But a kid doesn’t understand that.””
She looked around the attic.
“At least you stayed.””
I looked away.
Because hearing that almost destroyed me.
Almost.
Then something caught my eye.
A photograph sitting beneath the desk.
I picked it up.
It was old.
A picture of my father.
Sarah’s mother.
And a young Richard.
But they weren’t standing like friends.
They were arguing.
And on the back of the photograph was another message.
This one written by my father.
I read it aloud.
“Richard never knew the entire truth.””
Sarah looked alarmed.
“What truth?””
I turned the photograph over.
The rest of the sentence was hidden because the paper had been torn.
Only three words remained.
*Emily is not…*
Emily stepped closer.
“What?””
I stared at the ripped photograph.
My hands went cold.
May you like
Because if my father was right…
Everything we believed about Emily’s past was a lie.
