Chapter 10: The Recording My Father Left Behind
The photo wouldn’t leave my mind.
My father.
Richard.
Sarah.
Standing together seventeen years ago.
The night everything changed.
The night Richard disappeared.
The night Emily lost the father she barely remembered.
I drove to Laura Bennett’s office with Emily beside me.
Neither of us spoke much.
There are moments when words feel useless.
This was one of them.
Emily stared out the window.
“I keep thinking about yesterday.””
I glanced at her.
“What about it?””
She swallowed.
“I was so happy when Richard showed up.””
I stayed quiet.
“I spent years imagining that moment.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought he would hug me and tell me he was sorry.””
She looked down.
“But instead, I hurt the person who was actually there.””
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
“Emily.””
She looked at me.
“You were confused.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
She looked surprised.
“But I’m not going to punish you for making a mistake.””
Tears formed in her eyes.
“I don’t deserve how kind you are.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not how love works.””
She looked away.
And I knew she heard me.
Maybe not fully.
But enough.
When we arrived at the attorney’s office, Laura was waiting.
She was a woman in her late fifties with tired eyes and a calm expression.
“You must be Emily.””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
Laura smiled sadly.
“I knew your grandfather. He spoke about you often.””
Emily looked confused.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
I still struggled hearing that.
My father.
The man who had become more mysterious after death than he ever was alive.
Laura handed me a small wooden box.
“He left this for you.””
I touched the lid.
My name was carved into the top.
Not printed.
Carved.
Like he wanted me to know he made it himself.
“When did he prepare this?””
Laura looked down.
“Months before he died.””
I opened it.
Inside was a small recorder.
A flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
I unfolded it.
Michael,
If you are hearing this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I’m sorry I wasn’t brave enough to tell you myself.
But I need you to understand something.
Everything I did was because I loved you.
My hands shook.
Emily placed her hand over mine.
“Play it.””
I nodded.
Laura left the room.
We pressed the button.
A few seconds of static filled the air.
Then my father’s voice.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakable.
“Richard, you need to understand something.””
My heart stopped.
A second voice answered.
Richard.
“I understand perfectly.””
My father sighed.
“No, you don’t.””
The recording continued.
“You think this is about money. You think Emily is a way back into a life you abandoned.””
Richard laughed.
“You always thought you were better than everyone.””
My father sounded tired.
“I thought you were better than this.””
Silence.
Then Richard spoke.
“You don’t know what it’s like watching someone else raise your child.””
My father answered immediately.
“Then you should have stayed.””
Those words hit me.
Because they were exactly what I had wanted to say.
Richard became angry.
“You think Michael is some hero?””
My father didn’t respond.
“You chose him because he was useful.””
My fingers tightened.
Then my father said something that made me freeze.
“No. I chose him because he was the only person who loved Emily when nobody was watching.””
Emily covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
Richard’s voice lowered.
“What happens when Michael finds out?””
“Finds out what?””
“That he’s not just a guardian.””
My heart raced.
My father was silent.
Then Richard said:
“You know the truth about his mother.””
I looked at Emily.
“What does that mean?””
The recording continued.
My father sounded angry.
“Leave my son out of this.””
Richard laughed.
“Then give me what I want.””
“And if I don’t?””
“You’ll regret it.””
The recording ended.
We sat frozen.
“That’s it?”” Emily whispered.
“No.””
I looked at the recorder.
“There’s more.””
Laura had mentioned a flash drive.
I opened the files.
There was one audio file.
Created three days before my father died.
I pressed play.
This time, my father spoke alone.
“Michael.””
My throat tightened.
“If you’re hearing this, I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know you spent years believing I abandoned you. I know you carried anger you never deserved to carry.””
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
“You were always my greatest regret.””
Emily looked at me.
My father continued.
“But you were also my greatest pride.””
The recording paused.
Then:
“There is something you must know about Emily.””
I leaned closer.
“Something that changes everything.””
The audio crackled.
Then my father said:
“Richard is not the only person who lied about her birth.””
The recording stopped.
I stared at the screen.
Emily whispered:
“What does that mean?””
Before I could answer, Laura knocked on the door.
She looked nervous.
“Michael.””
I stood.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“I just received a message.””
“From who?””
She looked at Emily.
“Richard.””
My stomach dropped.
“What did he say?””
Laura handed me her phone.
May you like
The message was short.
*If Michael listens to the second recording, he’ll learn why his father was willing to die protecting Emily.*
