Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Left

I dropped the phone.

Daniel caught it before it hit the floor.

Neither of us moved.

The voice.

The name.

Impossible.

Daniel slowly raised the phone.

“Hello?””

Silence.

Then the voice returned.

“Daniel?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“You’re alive.””

The words came out like an accusation.

A long pause followed.

“Yes.””

My knees weakened.

Six years.

Six years believing someone had disappeared.

Six years believing a chapter of my life was gone.

And he was alive.

“Where are you?”” Daniel asked.

“I can’t tell you.””

Daniel’s anger returned.

“You call my wife after six years and refuse to tell us where you are?””

“I’m trying to protect her.””

I grabbed the phone.

“Protect me from what?””

The voice softened.

“Emily.””

Hearing my name from him felt strange.

Familiar.

Painful.

“I don’t remember you.””

Silence.

Then Ethan said:

“I know.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“What happened to me?””

“You were hurt.””

“Because of you?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“Because of Margaret.””

Daniel looked at me.

Ethan continued.

“She found out Lily existed before Daniel knew.””

My hand went to my mouth.

“She threatened me.””

“With what?””

“My life.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“What did she do?””

Ethan was quiet.

Then:

“She made it look like I abandoned Emily.””

I closed my eyes.

“And I believed that?””

“She made everyone believe it.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted Daniel to marry someone else.””

The words hurt.

Even though they were about the past.

“Someone else?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then answered:

“Her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Margaret wanted Daniel to marry a woman from a wealthy family.””

Daniel looked disgusted.

“She tried to control my marriage?””

“She tried to control everything.””

I sat down.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“Because I was arrested.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Margaret accused me of threatening her.””

My eyes widened.

“She framed you?””

“Yes.””

“Where were you?””

“Prison.””

The silence was unbearable.

“How did you get out?””

“Recently.””

Daniel paced the room.

“This is insane.””

Ethan said:

“I know.””

Then his voice changed.

“But there’s something you need to understand.””

“What?””

“Margaret didn’t act alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who helped her?””

Silence.

Then:

“Someone close to you.””

Daniel and I looked at each other.

“No,” Daniel said.

Ethan continued.

“The person who helped her hide the evidence was the same person who had access to your house.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Before Ethan answered, another voice came from behind us.

A voice that made my blood run cold.

“Emily?””

We turned.

Michael stood in the doorway.

He looked terrified.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

Michael looked at the phone.

Then at me.

And I saw something in his face.

Guilt.

Not surprise.

Guilt.

Ethan heard him.

“Michael is there, isn’t he?””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew he was calling.””

Michael swallowed.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“You knew Ethan was alive?””

Michael looked at me.

“I knew.””

The betrayal hurt worse than I expected.

“Why?””

Michael looked broken.

“Because I was the one who helped him survive.””

Daniel stared.

“Then why didn’t you tell us?””

Michael’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Mom made me choose.””

“Choose what?””

He looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

Then back at us.

“My silence…”

A pause.

“Or your daughter’s life.””

The room went cold.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Michael’s voice shook.

“It means Margaret wasn’t trying to erase Lily’s past.””

He looked at me.

“She was trying to erase Lily completely.””

May you like

And then Michael said the words that changed everything.

“Because six years ago, my mother tried to have your daughter taken away forever.””
