Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Test
Daniel stared at Lily.
Then he looked at Margaret.
“What did she mean?””
Margaret shook her head quickly.
“She’s a child. She doesn’t understand.””
But Lily did understand.
She understood enough to be afraid.
I knew my daughter.
She was sensitive. She was shy around strangers. She cried when cartoon characters got hurt.
But Lily never invented things like this.
“Daniel,” I whispered, “she heard something.””
Margaret pointed at me.
“You’re filling her head with lies.””
My anger exploded.
“You threw my daughter into a trash can, and now you’re calling her a liar?””
Daniel stepped between us.
“Mom, answer the question.””
Margaret looked at her son.
For years, I had watched her control him with guilt.
She would remind him of everything she sacrificed.
Every birthday she missed.
Every bill she helped pay.
Every time she claimed she had “always been there.””
But this time was different.
Daniel wasn’t looking at her like a son.
He was looking at her like a father protecting his child.
“Why was Michael’s DNA used?”” he asked again.
Margaret grabbed her purse.
“This conversation is ridiculous.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was calm.
That scared me more.
“You don’t get to walk away.””
Margaret stopped.
“You are my son.””
“And Lily is my daughter.””
The silence between them was heavy.
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know everything.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
“Not here.””
I almost laughed.
Not here?
After she had humiliated my child in our backyard?
After she had hurt her?
“You don’t get to choose the place anymore,” I said.
Margaret glared.
“You have no idea what you married into.””
Daniel took the report from his hand.
“Actually, I think I’m starting to.””
That night, after Margaret finally left, Lily refused to sleep alone.
She sat in the middle of our bed holding her stuffed rabbit.
“Mommy?””
“Yes, baby?””
“Does Grandma hate me?””
My heart shattered.
I brushed her hair away from her face.
“No.””
But the word felt impossible to say.
Because I had seen hate in Margaret’s eyes.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Hate.
“She’s wrong,” I whispered.
“You are loved.””
Lily looked at Daniel.
“Daddy still loves me?””
Daniel immediately pulled her into his arms.
“More than anything in this world.””
She nodded slowly.
But I could tell she was trying to believe him.
Later that night, after Lily finally slept, Daniel sat at the kitchen table with the DNA report.
I had never seen him so quiet.
“What are you thinking?”” I asked.
He rubbed his forehead.
“I’m thinking my mother did something terrible.””
“She did.””
He looked at me.
“No. I mean something bigger.””
He tapped the paper.
“Why Michael?””
I sat across from him.
“Maybe she made a mistake.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My mother doesn’t make mistakes.””
He was right.
Margaret planned everything.
The perfect birthday dinners.
The family photos.
The stories she told neighbors.
She controlled every detail of her life.
“This report was intentional,” Daniel said.
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then what does it mean?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he picked up his phone.
“I’m calling Michael.””
I grabbed his arm.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
He looked toward the hallway where Lily slept.
“But I need to know why my brother’s name is connected to my daughter.””
The call rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then Michael answered.
“Daniel?””
His voice sounded relaxed.
Too relaxed.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“At home. Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then at the DNA report.
“Because I found something with your name on it.””
Another pause.
“What kind of something?””
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“A DNA test.””
Silence.
Then Michael said something so quietly that Daniel almost missed it.
“What did Mom tell you?””
Daniel froze.
My eyes widened.
He put the phone on speaker.
“Why did you ask what Mom told me?””
No answer.
“Michael?””
Finally, his brother spoke.
“Daniel… you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your mother wasn’t trying to hurt Lily.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Then what was she doing?””
Michael exhaled.
And his next words changed everything.
“She was trying to stop the truth from coming out.””
Daniel stood.
“What truth?””
A long silence followed.
May you like
Then Michael whispered:
“The truth about what happened six years ago, the night Lily was born.””
