Chapter 13: The Truth About My Father
The name on the document meant nothing to me.
And yet, everyone around me reacted like it meant everything.
I looked at Michael.
“My father?””
He nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Daniel took the paper from my hands.
“Emily’s father?””
Michael stared at the document.
“I thought he was dead.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael looked at me.
“Your father was the reason Mom became obsessed with controlling everything.””
I shook my head.
“My father died when I was young.””
Michael hesitated.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“I’m sorry.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“No.””
Michael looked at Daniel.
“Margaret told everyone he died.””
My voice trembled.
“She lied?””
“Yes.””
I backed away.
My entire life suddenly felt like a story someone else had written.
My memories.
My family.
My past.
All controlled by people who thought they knew what was best for me.
“Who was my father?””
Michael looked at the name again.
“Richard Cole.””
My heart stopped.
Cole.
The same last name as Ethan.
I turned toward Ethan.
He looked just as shocked.
“My father?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I never knew.””
Michael looked between us.
“Because Margaret made sure nobody knew.””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“Explain.””
Michael took a deep breath.
“Richard Cole was wealthy. Powerful. He knew Margaret years before any of us.””
“And?””
“And he had information.””
“What information?””
Michael looked at me.
“Information about your family.””
I felt sick.
“What does my father have to do with Lily?””
Michael walked toward the files.
“Everything.””
He pulled out another document.
“This is why Margaret was afraid.””
Daniel grabbed it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he froze.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
It was a medical report.
A genetic test.
Not Lily’s.
Mine.
My hands shook.
“What am I looking at?””
Michael answered.
“Your mother’s medical history.””
I frowned.
“My mother?””
Michael nodded.
“Margaret wasn’t just hiding Ethan.””
He pointed to the report.
“She was hiding the fact that Emily’s family had a history she didn’t want exposed.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What history?””
Michael swallowed.
“Richard Cole was Margaret’s business partner.””
The room became silent.
My heart pounded.
“Why would that matter?””
“Because when Richard died, Margaret inherited control of everything.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does if you know what happened.””
Michael looked at me.
“Your father didn’t die naturally.””
The words cut through me.
“What?””
“He was investigating Margaret.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“All my life, I thought…”
I couldn’t finish.
Michael lowered his voice.
“He found out she had been manipulating people for years.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“And she got rid of him.””
Michael didn’t answer.
But he didn’t need to.
Ethan looked at me.
“Your whole life has been surrounded by her lies.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter.
The one person Margaret couldn’t control.
The one person who made her afraid.
“Why did she hate Lily?””
Michael answered quietly.
“Because Lily reminded her that she wasn’t in control.””
I wiped my tears.
“She destroyed everything.””
Daniel came beside me.
“No.””
He took my hand.
“She tried.””
The difference mattered.
Because Lily was still here.
I was still here.
We still had a chance.
Then the officer entered the room.
“We found something else.””
Everyone turned.
He held up a small envelope.
“It was hidden behind the wall.””
Michael looked terrified.
“What?””
The officer handed it to me.
My name was written on the front.
Not Margaret’s handwriting.
Not Michael’s.
Someone else’s.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
The first line made me stop breathing.
*Emily, if you are reading this, I am already gone.*
I knew the handwriting.
Somehow.
I didn’t know how.
But I did.
It was my father’s.
The letter was short.
But every word felt like a piece of my life returning.
*Your mother died believing she protected you. She was wrong.*
I looked up.
Daniel watched me.
I continued.
*Margaret Bennett is dangerous because she believes love gives her permission to control people.*
My hands shook.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
*The child you are raising is not the only person she tried to erase. She tried to erase you too.*
A cold silence filled the room.
Then the final sentence appeared.
*Emily, the truth is not that you forgot your past. The truth is that someone made you forget it.*
I looked at Daniel.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered something terrifying.
What else had been taken from me?
