Chapter 10: The Plan Behind the Lie

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The words hung in the room like smoke.

My daughter.

Taken away.

Forever.

I looked toward Lily’s bedroom door.

She was asleep.

Safe.

At least for tonight.

But six years ago, someone had tried to take that away from her.

“Michael,” Daniel said slowly, “explain.””

Michael stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

His face looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying this weight alone for too long.

“After Lily was born, Mom found out Ethan was her biological father.””

Daniel’s eyes hardened.

“And?””

“And she panicked.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because she had spent months convincing herself that Emily was trying to trap Daniel.””

My stomach turned.

“That makes no sense.””

“I know.””

Michael nodded.

“But Mom had already decided the story before she knew the facts.””

He sat down.

“She thought Ethan would come back. She thought he would expose everything she had done to push him away from Emily.””

I crossed my arms.

“So she tried to destroy him.””

Michael looked down.

“Yes.””

Daniel paced.

“And Lily?””

Michael swallowed.

“That was where she crossed the line.””

I felt anger rising.

“She hurt a child because she was afraid of losing control.””

Michael nodded.

“She believed if Lily disappeared, the evidence disappeared.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stared at him.

“You’re telling me my mother wanted to get rid of my daughter?””

Michael’s voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

A thousand memories of Margaret flashed through my mind.

Her holding Lily as a baby.

Her buying dresses.

Her taking pictures.

All fake.

Or maybe worse.

A performance.

“How?”” I asked.

Michael looked at me.

“She planned to convince everyone Lily was unsafe with you.””

“What?””

“She wanted custody questions raised. She wanted people to think you were unstable.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Me?””

“The woman who raised her?””

Michael nodded.

“She collected things.””

“What things?””

“Arguments. Small mistakes. Anything she could twist.””

Daniel stopped walking.

“She was building a case.””

“Yes.””

My hands trembled.

“She was preparing to take my daughter.””

Michael looked away.

“Not just take her.””

The way he said it made my heart stop.

“What do you mean?””

He hesitated.

“Mom had connections.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What kind of connections?””

“People who could make problems disappear.””

The anger on Daniel’s face was terrifying.

“My own mother.””

Michael looked at him.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

His voice cracked.

“I defended her.””

Nobody spoke.

“I defended her when Emily said she felt uncomfortable around her.””

He looked at me.

“I told you she was just being protective.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“I know.””

“I was wrong.””

I reached for his hand.

But before I could say anything, Michael’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And immediately went pale.

“What?””

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?””

Michael didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

Finally, he turned it around.

A message.

From Margaret.

*I know you talked.*

Michael froze.

Another message appeared.

*You have five minutes to fix this.*

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“She knows.””

Michael nodded.

“How?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily screamed.

A scream that made my entire body go cold.

“Mommy!””

I ran.

The bedroom door flew open.

Lily was standing on her bed, crying.

“What happened?””

She pointed toward the window.

“There was someone outside.””

My heart stopped.

Daniel rushed to the window.

The backyard was empty.

But something was lying on the grass.

A small envelope.

Daniel went outside.

A minute later, he came back holding it.

His face was pale.

“What is it?””

He handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

Of Lily.

Taken while she was sleeping.

On the back were six words.

*“Stop searching, or lose her.””*

My hands shook.

Daniel immediately called the police.

Michael looked terrified.

“She’s escalating.””

I looked at him.

“You knew she would do this.””

His silence was the answer.

Then his phone buzzed again.

This time, the message wasn’t from Margaret.

It was from an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

A photo of Ethan.

And underneath it:

*“The father should have stayed gone.””*

Daniel looked at Michael.

“Where is he?””

Michael hesitated.

“Daniel…”

“Where is Ethan?””

Michael looked terrified.

May you like

“He’s closer than you think.””

And then someone knocked on our front door.
