Chapter 12: The Room Beneath the Hospital

The old hospital wing looked abandoned.

The police cars outside should have made me feel safer.

They didn’t.

Because I knew Margaret.

She never acted without a reason.

She never left evidence behind by accident.

Daniel held my hand as we walked inside.

Ethan followed behind us.

Michael stayed close, his face pale.

“This is where it happened,” Michael whispered.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The night everything changed.””

The officers led us downstairs.

A forgotten basement.

Cold.

Dark.

The smell of dust and old medicine filled the air.

An officer turned.

“We found something strange.””

He opened a door.

Inside was a storage room.

But it wasn’t normal storage.

There were boxes.

Files.

Photographs.

My entire body went cold.

Daniel picked up a folder.

“Emily.””

I walked over.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Court papers.

Notes.

All about me.

All about Lily.

Margaret had been collecting evidence for years.

“She planned this,” Daniel whispered.

An officer found a small video recorder.

“Does this belong to anyone?””

Michael stepped forward.

“I’ve seen that before.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Where?””

“Mom’s house.””

The officer pressed play.

A recording started.

Margaret’s voice filled the room.

“If you are watching this, then someone betrayed me.””

Everyone froze.

Her voice was calm.

Almost emotionless.

“I did what I had to do.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“You’re hearing this?””

The recording continued.

“Emily was never supposed to become part of this family.””

My stomach twisted.

“I knew from the beginning she would ruin everything.””

Daniel looked sick.

“She hated me.””

The recording continued.

“I tried to separate them.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I warned Ethan.””

The room became silent.

“I gave him a chance to disappear.””

My blood ran cold.

Then Margaret said:

“But he refused.””

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“She admitted it.””

The recording continued.

“I thought losing Ethan would solve the problem.””

A pause.

“But then Lily was born.””

The sound of Margaret breathing filled the room.

“She looked exactly like him.””

I covered my mouth.

“She was proof.””

Daniel whispered:

“Proof of what?””

Then Margaret said the sentence that destroyed everything.

“Proof that I had helped create the biggest lie of my life.””

Everyone froze.

Michael looked confused.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“I thought I was protecting Daniel.””

A pause.

“But I was protecting myself.””

The video cut off.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan looked at Michael.

“What did she mean?””

Michael shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

The officer searched through the files.

Then he found something.

A birth certificate.

Not Lily’s.

Mine.

I frowned.

“What is that?””

Daniel opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

I read the document.

Then my hands went numb.

Because there was something written in the margin.

A handwritten note.

A name.

A name connected to my past.

Not Ethan.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Someone I had never heard of.

The officer looked at us.

“Do you know this person?””

I stared at the name.

“No.””

But Michael did.

His face drained of color.

“Michael?””

He stepped backward.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Who is it?””

Michael looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Emily…”

May you like

A tear ran down his face.

“That’s your father’s name.””
