Chapter 9: The Secret Inside Emma
Nobody moved.
The words echoed through the parking garage.
*My daughter.*
Emma’s fingers tightened around mine.
I stepped in front of her.
“She is not your daughter.””
Daniel smiled slightly.
“You really believe that?””
Sarah’s face went pale.
“Daniel, stop.””
He looked at her.
“You had your chance.””
The confidence in his voice made my anger rise.
“You don’t get to walk in here and claim a child after destroying her life.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Careful, Marcus.””
“Or what?””
His smile disappeared.
“Or you’ll learn how much of your life was built on a lie.””
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to demand answers.
But Emma was standing behind me.
So I stayed calm.
“Explain.””
Daniel walked closer.
“Eight years ago, Sarah discovered something valuable.””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel ignored her.
“She worked on a medical project involving regenerative technology.””
I looked at Sarah.
“What?””
She looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know everything at first.””
Daniel continued.
“Emma was born with a rare genetic marker.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your daughter was never ordinary.””
I hated the way he said it.
Like Emma was an object.
A discovery.
Not a child.
“She is a little girl.””
Daniel smiled.
“And that’s why you’re emotional.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a document.
“I have proof.””
I didn’t take it.
“From where?””
“My company archives.””
Sarah stepped forward.
“You stole those records.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I protected them.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You hid them.””
For the first time, Daniel looked irritated.
“You have no idea what you destroyed.””
Sarah laughed bitterly.
“I destroyed nothing.””
She pointed at Emma.
“You forgot something important.””
“What?””
“She is a person.””
The garage became silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“Why target her school?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the first sign of weakness I had seen.
“Why?””
Daniel looked away.
Then said:
“Because I needed you afraid.””
I frowned.
“Afraid of what?””
“Of losing her.””
The words landed.
“You wanted me to give her up.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel stared at Emma.
“Because as long as she was with you, I couldn’t get close.””
I felt sick.
“You used children to reach her?””
“I used pressure.””
“You traumatized an eight-year-old.””
His expression hardened.
“Temporary damage.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Emma heard it too.
Her small voice came from behind me.
“You hurt me on purpose?””
Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, his confidence disappeared.
Then it returned.
“Emma—”
“No.””
She stepped slightly forward.
“You knew?””
Nobody expected her to speak.
Especially Daniel.
She looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“You knew they were being mean to me?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
I watched my daughter’s face change.
Not fear.
Not sadness.
Something else.
Disappointment.
And somehow, that was worse.
“You’re not my dad.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I could have been.””
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“My dad helps me.””
The silence afterward was absolute.
Daniel stared at her.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
He looked defeated.
Then David Cole stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
He held another file.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
David looked at Daniel.
“Your friend forgot one detail.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What are you doing?””
David opened the folder.
“Releasing the original records.””
Sarah covered her mouth.
“Original?””
David nodded.
“The ones proving Daniel altered the medical reports.””
My eyes moved to Daniel.
“What did you alter?””
David answered.
“He changed the records to make it appear Emma needed his involvement.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You fabricated everything.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
But his voice lacked confidence.
The truth was finally catching him.
Then David said the words that changed the entire situation.
“There’s also evidence proving someone inside Westbrook Academy helped him.””
Rachel looked confused.
“Who?””
David pulled out one final document.
A name was written at the bottom.
My eyes stopped.
Because it wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t a board member.
It wasn’t a teacher.
It was someone who had stood beside me from the beginning.
Someone who had promised to help protect Emma.
I whispered:
“Impossible.””
Rachel looked at the paper.
Then at me.
“Marcus…”
May you like
The name stared back at us.
*Principal Anderson.*
