Chapter 12: The Family Behind the Monster
I brought Helen inside.
I didn’t know whether to trust her.
But I knew one thing.
She had answers.
And after everything I had learned, answers were more valuable than comfort.
She sat across from me in my father’s old office.
The same room where he had hidden the truth.
“The Whitmore family and the Cross family were connected for decades.””
I frowned.
“My father hated Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Then why help him?””
Helen looked down.
“Because your father believed every problem could be solved with enough control.””
I knew that wasn’t the whole story.
“What happened?””
She took a breath.
“Daniel’s father worked for Victor.””
That surprised me.
“He was an employee?””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“Daniel grew up watching wealthy people make decisions that changed other people’s lives.””
She paused.
“He learned the wrong lesson.””
I looked at the documents.
“He learned power mattered more than people.””
Helen nodded.
“Exactly.””
I stood.
“But what does Emma have to do with this?””
Helen looked at me.
“That’s the part your father never wanted you to know.””
My jaw tightened.
“Tell me.””
She reached into her bag and pulled out another envelope.
“Victor kept this separate because he knew someone would eventually come looking.””
Inside was a letter.
Not from my father.
From Daniel.
Years ago.
I read the first line.
*Victor, you promised me the research would belong to me.*
My hands tightened.
Helen explained.
“Daniel believed Victor stole his work.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Victor stopped him from hurting people.””
I read further.
Daniel blamed Victor for losing everything.
His career.
His reputation.
His power.
Then came the sentence that stopped me.
*The child is proof that the research worked.*
I looked up.
“What child?””
Helen didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I knew.
“Emma.””
Helen nodded.
“He believed Emma’s genetic marker was connected to the research.””
I shook my head.
“She’s a child.””
“Yes.””
“But he sees her as a discovery.””
“Yes.””
My anger returned.
A child had been forced to carry the weight of adults’ greed before she was old enough to understand the world.
My phone rang.
Sarah.
I answered immediately.
“Are you okay?””
Her voice sounded frightened.
“Marcus, you need to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“Daniel wasn’t arrested.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He was released.””
“How?””
“Someone posted his bail.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Sarah hesitated.
Then:
“Someone powerful.””
The line went quiet.
I looked at Helen.
She already knew.
“You know who.””
Helen nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Her answer was barely a whisper.
“Your father’s old business partner.””
I frowned.
“My father had no business partner left.””
Helen looked at me.
“You’re wrong.””
She reached for another document.
A partnership agreement.
The signature at the bottom belonged to someone I thought had nothing to do with my family.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who had helped me build Cross Holdings.
I stared.
“No.””
Helen watched me.
“Marcus…”
I couldn’t breathe.
Because the name on the agreement belonged to the one person who had been beside me through every battle.
The person who knew my company.
My family.
My daughter.
The person who had access to everything.
My closest friend.
Rachel.
I looked at the document again.
And the truth became impossible to ignore.
May you like
The person funding Daniel’s escape wasn’t someone from the past.
It was someone standing beside me in the present.
