Chapter 7: The Woman Who Never Stopped Searching

The voice on the phone belonged to a woman I had spent eight years believing I would never meet.

Emma’s birth mother.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

My office disappeared.

The city outside the window disappeared.

All I could hear was my daughter’s voice from moments earlier.

“She said she was sorry she couldn’t protect me.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Where are you?””

There was silence.

Then the woman whispered:

“I can’t tell you.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel knows I contacted you, he’ll come after both of us.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Who are you?””

Another pause.

“My name is Sarah Bennett.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the fear in her voice meant everything.

“Sarah, if you’re really Emma’s mother, you need to understand something. My daughter has been targeted at school.””

“I know.””

My stomach tightened.

“You know?””

“I saw the videos.””

I looked toward Rachel.

She immediately understood.

“You have access to the footage?””

Sarah’s voice cracked.

“No. Daniel showed it to me.””

The room went silent.

“Why would he show you?””

“Because he wanted me to know what would happen if I came back.””

My hand tightened into a fist.

“What exactly does that mean?””

“He told me Emma was safe as long as I stayed away.””

A terrible realization settled over me.

Daniel wasn’t just hiding something.

He had been controlling the entire situation.

“How long have you known where she was?””

Sarah took a shaky breath.

“Eight years.””

I closed my eyes.

Eight years.

A mother knowing where her child was.

Watching from a distance.

Unable to reach her.

“Why didn’t you come to me?””

The silence that followed hurt more than any answer.

“Because Daniel made sure I couldn’t.””

I looked at Emma.

She was sitting on the couch, unaware that her entire history was changing.

“What did he do?””

Sarah’s voice became quieter.

“He destroyed my reputation. He made everyone believe I was unstable.””

Rachel stepped closer.

She mouthed, “Put it on speaker.””

I nodded.

“Sarah, I need you to tell me everything.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Emma was born because of a mistake Daniel thought he could erase.””

I frowned.

“What mistake?””

“His company was testing a treatment they weren’t supposed to test.””

Rachel’s eyes widened.

Sarah continued.

“I worked there. I found documents showing they were hiding side effects.””

The pieces started connecting.

The research company.

The missing reports.

The fear.

“Emma?””

Sarah’s voice softened.

“Emma was born after I discovered what they were doing. I became a liability.””

I looked at my daughter.

“She had nothing to do with this.””

“No.””

Sarah’s voice broke.

“She was the reason I kept fighting.””

I sat down slowly.

“Why did you give her up?””

The question was painful.

But I needed the truth.

Sarah didn’t answer immediately.

“When Emma was born, Daniel found out I had copies of the evidence.””

My jaw tightened.

“He threatened you.””

“He threatened her.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said if I didn’t disappear, he would make sure Emma grew up without anyone protecting her.””

The room felt colder.

“He told me you were the only person who could keep her safe.””

I looked confused.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A quiet breath.

“Because you were the only person Daniel couldn’t control.””

I stared at the phone.

Then I remembered.

Years ago, before Emma entered my life, I had publicly exposed one of Daniel’s business partners for fraud.

Daniel had never forgiven me.

He had warned me.

He had said:

“People like you eventually lose everything.””

I never knew what he meant.

Until now.

“Sarah, where are you?””

“I’ll meet you.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Saint Mary’s Hospital parking garage.””

The call ended.

I immediately looked at Rachel.

“We go now.””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, if this is a trap—”

“It isn’t.””

“How do you know?””

Because I had heard something in Sarah’s voice.

Something I recognized.

The voice of a parent who had been powerless for too long.

But before we left, Emma walked toward me.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Yeah?””

“Was that her?””

I froze.

Children had a way of seeing through walls adults built.

“What do you mean?””

“The woman on the phone.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Emma looked down at her drawing.

“The woman who was crying.””

I walked closer.

“Emma…”

She looked up.

“Is she my mom?””

The question hung in the air.

I knelt beside her.

“I don’t know all the answers yet.””

She studied my face.

“But you’re going to find out.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

She hugged me.

“Okay.””

That was all.

No anger.

No fear.

Just trust.

And somehow that made everything harder.

Because now I wasn’t only fighting for justice.

I was fighting for the little girl who believed I could fix anything.

As we walked toward the elevator, Rachel’s phone suddenly rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“Marcus.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She turned the screen toward me.

A message had just arrived.
