Chapter 11: The Secret Daniel Was Protecting

The photograph sat between my fingers.

A tiny baby Emma.

Wrapped in a hospital blanket.

Sarah beside her.

And another person standing in the background.

Someone I knew.

Someone I never expected.

I couldn’t speak.

Rachel looked at me.

“Marcus?””

I placed the photo down.

“That’s Victor Cross.””

Her eyes widened.

“My father?””

I nodded.

My father.

The man who had built the foundation of my company.

The man who taught me that loyalty mattered.

The man who died five years ago.

I had spent years believing he left me a legacy.

Now I wondered if he had left me a secret.

A knock came at the door.

Emma appeared, rubbing her eyes.

“Daddy?””

I quickly hid the photo.

“What are you doing awake?””

She walked over.

“I had a bad dream.””

I crouched.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“I dreamed everyone left.””

My heart broke.

I pulled her close.

“I’m not leaving.””

She held onto me.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

After she went back upstairs, I returned to the photo.

Rachel opened the attachment details.

“It was sent through a hidden server.””

“Can you trace it?””

“Trying.””

I stared at my father’s face.

The question I had avoided for years finally surfaced.

What did he know?

The next morning, I went to the old Cross family estate.

The house had been empty since my father’s death.

I hadn’t returned in years.

Too many memories.

Too many unanswered questions.

The place smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Dust.

History.

I searched his office.

Every drawer.

Every cabinet.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

A painting behind the desk.

One corner wasn’t aligned correctly.

I moved it.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Documents.

Letters.

Photographs.

And one envelope.

My name was written on it.

*Marcus. When you find this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth.*

I sat down.

The letter continued.

*I made mistakes. Bigger ones than you know.*

My breathing slowed.

My father admitted he had worked with Daniel years ago.

Not as a partner.

As a rival.

He had discovered Daniel’s illegal research practices.

But instead of exposing him immediately, he tried to control the situation.

He thought he could manage Daniel.

He was wrong.

The final page contained one sentence.

*Emma was never Daniel’s opportunity. She was his fear.*

I looked at Rachel.

“What does that mean?””

She read the letter again.

“Your father knew Emma was evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Before she answered, another paper fell from the envelope.

A birth certificate.

Not Emma’s.

Someone else’s.

I picked it up.

The name made my stomach drop.

Daniel Whitmore.

But the date was impossible.

Because it was from before he was born.

Rachel frowned.

“What is this?””

I turned the paper over.

Written on the back:

*The Whitmore family secret has lasted three generations.*

I heard a sound outside.

A car door closing.

I froze.

Rachel noticed.

“Someone followed us?””

I looked through the window.

A woman stood outside the house.

Older.

Watching.

I stepped outside.

“Who are you?””

She looked at me.

Then at the papers in my hand.

“You found Victor’s box.””

“Who are you?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“My name is Helen Cross.””

I stared.

“My father had one sister.””

She nodded.

“I’m your aunt.””

I didn’t move.

“My father never mentioned you.””

“That’s because he spent his whole life trying to protect you from what our family did.””

“What did our family do?””

Helen looked toward the house.

Then whispered:

“We created Daniel Whitmore.””

The words chilled me.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the documents.

“It means Daniel didn’t become dangerous by himself.””

A pause.

Then:

“He was taught.””
