Chapter 8: The Trap Beneath the Truth

The message stayed on Rachel’s phone screen.

Short.

Cold.

Confident.

Daniel wasn’t asking.

He wasn’t warning.

He was reminding me that he believed he still had control.

Emma stood beside me holding my hand.

I locked my phone.

“Don’t tell her.””

Rachel nodded.

“Agreed.””

The drive to Saint Mary’s Hospital was quiet.

Too quiet.

Houston’s streets moved around us, people going to dinner, walking dogs, living ordinary lives.

Meanwhile, my daughter’s entire world was changing.

I kept looking in the rearview mirror.

Emma was staring out the window.

Finally, she spoke.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Will she like me?””

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Who?””

“My mom.””

The question was so innocent.

So painful.

“I think she already does.””

Emma looked down.

“But she left.””

I swallowed.

“She had reasons.””

“Bad reasons?””

“No.””

I paused.

“Hard reasons.””

She nodded slowly.

Kids deserved the truth.

But they also deserved it at the right time.

When we arrived at the hospital garage, I noticed something immediately.

Too empty.

Saint Mary’s parking garage was usually crowded.

Tonight, only a few cars sat between the concrete pillars.

Rachel noticed too.

“This feels wrong.””

I nodded.

But I kept walking.

Because somewhere inside that garage was a woman who had lost eight years with her daughter.

A woman who deserved to tell her story.

Then I heard footsteps.

A woman stepped from behind a parked car.

She looked exhausted.

Older than she probably was.

Her eyes went straight to me.

Then to Emma.

She covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

Emma stepped closer to me.

The woman started crying.

“Emma.””

My daughter looked at me.

“Daddy?””

I nodded.

“It’s okay.””

Sarah took one careful step forward.

“I’m sorry.””

Emma stared.

“For what?””

Sarah’s face broke.

“For not being there.””

The words were barely audible.

Emma didn’t move.

Neither did I.

Because there was no script for this moment.

No perfect sentence.

No way to repair eight missing years.

Sarah wiped her tears.

“I wanted to hold you every day.””

Emma looked confused.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Sarah looked at me.

Then back at her daughter.

“Because someone made sure I couldn’t.””

Before she could explain, headlights flashed across the garage.

A black SUV entered.

My entire body reacted.

“Get behind me.””

Sarah’s expression changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“He found me.””

The SUV stopped.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

A security officer.

He held a folder.

“Marcus Cross?””

I stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

“My name is David Cole.””

“Why are you here?””

He looked at Sarah.

Then at Emma.

“I was hired to find the truth.””

Rachel frowned.

“That’s supposed to make us trust you?””

David ignored her.

He handed me the folder.

“Everything Daniel tried to hide.””

I opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Internal emails.

Research documents.

My eyes moved faster.

Then I saw something.

A signature.

My heart stopped.

“Daniel didn’t just cover up the research.””

David nodded.

“He created the entire operation.””

Sarah looked down.

“He knew I would expose him.””

I turned another page.

There it was.

A document from eight years ago.

A legal agreement.

My name.

Emma’s name.

And Daniel’s signature.

“What is this?””

Sarah whispered:

“The reason he never wanted you to know the truth.””

I read the agreement.

My breathing slowed.

Because according to the document…

Daniel had once tried to become Emma’s legal guardian.

Not me.

Not Sarah.

Him.

I looked at Sarah.

“Why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because Emma wasn’t the only thing he wanted.””

“What else?””

Sarah stepped closer.

Her voice shook.

“He wanted what was inside her medical records.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, another vehicle entered the garage.

This time, I recognized it.

Daniel Whitmore stepped out.

Alone.

Clapping slowly.

“You always were difficult to scare, Marcus.””

Emma grabbed my hand.

Daniel looked at her.

Then smiled.

“That’s my mistake.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?””

Daniel adjusted his jacket.

“The same thing I wanted eight years ago.””

May you like

He looked at Emma.

“The truth about my daughter.””
