Chapter 9: The Truth Evelyn Never Expected
Daniel didn’t put Evelyn on speaker.
He didn’t have to.
The panic on his face told me enough.
“She knows?”” Evelyn’s voice came faintly through the phone.
Daniel looked at me.
“Mom…”
I reached out my hand.
“Give me the phone.””
His eyes widened.
“No.””
That single word told me everything.
Not “Sarah, please.””
Not “Let me explain.””
Just no.
I looked at him.
“You’re afraid of what she’ll say.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then give it to me.””
He held the phone tighter.
The old Daniel would have convinced me.
He would have softened his voice.
He would have reminded me of our wedding.
Our vows.
Our memories.
But the person standing in front of me was different.
Or maybe I was finally seeing him clearly.
I took out my phone.
I opened the screenshots.
“You want to know what hurts most?””
Daniel looked at me.
“It’s not that your mother hated me.””
He stayed silent.
“It’s that you knew.””
His face fell.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew enough.””
I placed the phone on the table.
“You knew she wanted me gone.””
Daniel sat down.
His shoulders dropped.
“I thought it would make things easier.””
I stared at him.
There it was.
The truth.
Not an accident.
Not a misunderstanding.
A choice.
“Easier for who?””
He rubbed his face.
“For everyone.””
I laughed softly.
“Everyone except me.””
He looked up.
“I was trying to protect my family.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I pointed toward the door.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked older suddenly.
Tired.
Guilty.
But guilt wasn’t the same as accountability.
“I never wanted things to get this bad.””
I looked at him.
“But you let them.””
A tear fell from his eye.
“I love you.””
I believed he meant it.
That was the saddest part.
I believed he loved me.
But love without loyalty had destroyed me.
My phone rang.
Megan.
I answered.
“Sarah?””
“Yes.””
“You need to come here.””
Her voice was urgent.
“Where?””
“The storage unit.””
I frowned.
“What storage unit?””
“The one Daniel rented.””
My stomach tightened.
“How do you know?””
“I found the payment records.””
I looked at Daniel.
He had gone completely still.
“What’s in it?””
Megan hesitated.
“Sarah…”
“What?””
“I think you need to see it yourself.””
Daniel stood.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“You shouldn’t go there.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I grabbed my coat.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Sarah, please.””
I stopped at the door.
For years, that word would have stopped me.
Please.
I would have turned around.
I would have listened.
I would have forgiven.
Not anymore.
“Did you know about the storage unit?””
His silence confirmed it.
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
His face twisted.
“For what?””
“For finally giving me the truth without making me beg.””
I left.
The storage unit was across town.
Megan was waiting outside when I arrived.
She hugged me carefully because of my injured hand.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t apologize.””
She looked at the building.
“Are you ready?””
No.
I wasn’t.
But I nodded anyway.
The lock clicked open.
The door rolled upward.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Old documents.
Photographs.
Files.
Megan looked around.
“Sarah…”
I stepped inside.
A box near the entrance had my name written on it.
Not Sarah.
Not my full name.
Just:
*THE CASE.*
My blood went cold.
I opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Photos.
Notes.
And one document on top.
A document dated two months before Christmas.
I picked it up.
The title read:
*Marriage Dissolution Strategy.*
I stared at the words.
Then I saw the signature at the bottom.
Not Daniel’s.
Not Evelyn’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone I knew.
My hands began shaking.
