Chapter 14: The Letter From My Mother

I didn’t know how long I stood there.

Seconds.

Minutes.

Maybe longer.

The world had already changed so many times that another secret almost felt impossible.

Almost.

“My mother?””

The word came out like a question.

Evelyn nodded.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

I laughed.

“You mean you wanted me never to find out.””

She looked away.

That was answer enough.

I turned to Daniel.

“You knew?””

His silence hurt.

Again.

“You knew.””

“I knew something.””

“Something?””

He looked desperate.

“Sarah, I didn’t know everything.””

I shook my head.

“You always know enough.””

I walked away from them.

I couldn’t stand looking at their faces.

Megan followed me into the kitchen.

“Sarah.””

“I need a minute.””

She nodded.

For once, nobody tried to stop me.

I stood by the counter.

The same counter where Daniel and I had cooked together.

The same place where I once believed I had a future.

Then Claire walked in.

She held an envelope.

“I think you should have this.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Something your father kept.””

My hands froze.

“How do you have it?””

“He showed it to Evelyn.””

I took the envelope.

My mother’s handwriting was on the front.

My heart stopped.

I hadn’t seen her handwriting in years.

My mother had passed away when I was young.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

One page.

But it changed everything.

*Sarah,*

*If you are reading this, it means someone finally decided you deserved the truth.*

I stopped.

My eyes filled.

I kept reading.

*Your father will tell you I abandoned him. He will tell you I left because I didn’t care. That isn’t true.*

My breathing became uneven.

*I left because I discovered he was using our family to build something dishonest.*

I looked up.

Everyone was watching me.

I continued.

*He always believed people were tools. Even the people he loved.*

My hands shook.

The words felt impossible.

But they felt familiar.

Because I had lived them.

*I wanted to protect you. I wanted you to grow up away from that.*

A tear fell onto the page.

Then the final lines.

*If someone ever tries to convince you that you are difficult, remember this: people who benefit from your silence will always call your voice a problem.*

I covered my mouth.

My mother had known.

She had understood.

Even before I did.

I folded the letter.

Then I looked at Evelyn.

“How did my father know about your plan?””

She hesitated.

“He didn’t.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“He wasn’t helping us.””

I looked at him.

“Then what?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“He was using us.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He showed me a message.

From my father.

*Keep them distracted. I’ll handle Sarah when the timing is right.*

I stared.

“What was he planning?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel said:

“He wanted control of the inheritance your mother left you.””

I felt cold.

My mother.

Her money.

Her protection.

Everything.

My father wanted it.

“And you?””

Daniel looked down.

“I found out too late.””

I looked around the room.

Everyone had taken something from me.

Trust.

Peace.

Security.

But my mother had left me something too.

A warning.

I turned to Evelyn.

“Why tell me now?””

She looked broken.

“Because your father contacted me yesterday.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What did he say?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“He said if we didn’t destroy you first…”

The room went still.

“…he would.””

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then I heard a voice I hadn’t heard in months.

My father.

“Sarah.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“I want what your mother left you.””

I closed my eyes.

“You don’t get anything.””

He laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

My blood ran cold.

“Understand what?””

His voice lowered.

“That everything you think you own…”

May you like

A pause.

“…was never really yours.””
