Chapter 12: The Secret Behind the Silence
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat in Megan’s guest room staring at the ceiling.
The word kept repeating in my mind.
*Child.*
A child I didn’t know about.
A secret Daniel and his family discussed while I was living beside him.
Breathing beside him.
Trusting him.
At 6:17 a.m., my phone rang.
Daniel.
I watched it.
I let it ring.
Then it stopped.
A minute later, a message appeared.
*Please answer. It’s not what you think.*
I almost threw the phone across the room.
That sentence.
Always that sentence.
I called him back.
He answered immediately.
“Sarah.””
“Who is the child?””
Silence.
A terrible silence.
I closed my eyes.
“Daniel.””
“Where did you see that?””
“Answer me.””
His breathing changed.
“Sarah…”
“Who is the child?””
Finally, he whispered:
“My niece.””
I froze.
“What?””
“My sister’s daughter.””
I sat up.
“Claire’s?””
“Yes.””
I felt relief for half a second.
Then confusion replaced it.
“Why were you hiding Claire’s child from me?””
“I wasn’t.””
“You said I didn’t know yet.””
Daniel was silent.
“Daniel.””
He sighed.
“Claire was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“She was afraid you would find out the truth.””
My stomach tightened.
“What truth?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Claire’s daughter isn’t mine.””
I frowned.
“I know.””
“She was afraid you would ask why I was involved.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Why were you involved?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I stood.
“Tell me.””
“She asked me to help.””
“With what?””
His voice became quiet.
“The child’s father.””
I waited.
Then the answer came.
“The child’s father is someone you know.””
The room felt cold.
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Your brother.””
I went completely still.
My brother.
The man who had stood beside me at my wedding.
The man who called me every Sunday.
The man who said he hated drama.
“No.””
“It’s true.””
“How?””
“I don’t know the whole story.””
I gripped the phone.
“You don’t get to say that anymore.””
“I’m telling you what I know.””
“Then tell me everything.””
Daniel was quiet.
Finally:
“Claire had a relationship with your brother years ago.””
I sat down slowly.
“When?””
“Before you met me.””
“And the child?””
“Was born after they separated.””
I covered my face.
My family.
His family.
Everyone connected by secrets.
Everyone hiding things.
“Why would this be part of a plan against me?””
Daniel’s voice changed.
“Because Claire was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“She was afraid you would discover she had been lying.””
I looked out the window.
The city was waking up.
People were going to work.
Buying coffee.
Living normal lives.
And my entire world had become a maze of hidden truths.
“What does Claire have to do with my divorce?””
Daniel answered slowly.
“She knew about the documents.””
“Which documents?””
“The divorce papers.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course she did.””
“She helped prepare them.””
“And you let her.””
“I was scared.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
There it was.
The real answer.
Not love.
Not confusion.
Fear.
I ended the call.
An hour later, there was a knock at Megan’s door.
I froze.
Megan looked through the window.
Then turned pale.
“It’s Daniel.””
I stood.
“What does he want?””
Before she could answer, another car pulled up outside.
A woman stepped out.
Evelyn.
Then another.
Claire.
The three people who had helped destroy my marriage stood together in the snow.
Megan looked at me.
“Sarah…”
I walked toward the door.
My hand rested on the handle.
Then I heard Evelyn say something through the glass.
Something that made me stop.
“Sarah, we need to tell you the truth before your father does.””
I opened the door.
Because suddenly, I realized something.
May you like
Everyone had been hiding a secret.
But nobody had told me the biggest one yet.
