Chapter 8: The Papers That Were Never Meant For Me

I thought I would feel angry.

I thought I would scream.

I thought I would feel some explosion of emotion after hearing that Daniel had prepared divorce papers behind my back.

Instead, I felt strangely calm.

Like my heart had finally stopped fighting for something that was already gone.

Olivia placed another document on the table.

“I found this in the wrong folder at work.””

I looked at her.

“You worked with Daniel’s lawyer?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Daniel used a legal service connected to my company’s client network. I saw the name by accident.””

I looked down.

The first page had Daniel’s signature.

The second had Evelyn’s notes written in the margins.

My stomach twisted.

“She was involved?””

“Yes.””

I read the handwritten comments.

*Need to make sure Sarah appears unstable.*

My breathing stopped.

Another note:

*Christmas incident should help establish pattern.*

I looked up.

“Pattern?””

Olivia nodded.

“They wanted documentation that you were the problem.””

I felt sick.

The slap.

The insults.

The argument.

It wasn’t just cruelty.

It was evidence they wanted to create.

“They wanted me to react.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

I closed the folder.

“I don’t understand something.””

“What?””

“If they wanted me gone, why didn’t Daniel just leave?””

Olivia was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because leaving would make him the villain.””

The answer landed hard.

Daniel had always cared about how people saw him.

The perfect son.

The loyal husband.

The successful businessman.

He didn’t want a divorce.

He wanted a story where he was the victim.

I stood.

“I need to go home.””

Olivia looked worried.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“Sarah, don’t confront him alone.””

I looked at her.

“I’m not going to fight.””

“Then what?””

I picked up the folder.

“I’m going to listen.””

The apartment was empty when I arrived.

For the first time in days, I was grateful.

I walked through the rooms slowly.

Every object carried a memory.

The couch where Daniel and I watched movies.

The kitchen where we cooked together.

The hallway where he proposed.

I hated that my favorite memories still existed.

I hated that betrayal didn’t erase love instantly.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*I’m coming over. We need to fix this.*

I didn’t respond.

Ten minutes later, there was a knock.

I opened the door.

Daniel stood there.

No anger.

No frustration.

Just sadness.

The expression that used to make me forgive him.

“Sarah.””

I stepped aside.

“Come in.””

He looked surprised.

“You’re calm.””

“Yes.””

“That’s worse.””

I almost smiled.

At least he noticed.

He walked inside.

His eyes moved around the apartment.

“You took off your ring.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“Are you really serious about divorce?””

I looked at him.

“Are you?””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You prepared papers.””

Silence.

That was enough.

Daniel looked away.

“Who told you?””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s your concern?””

“Sarah, it’s not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

He didn’t answer.

I walked to the table and placed the folder down.

“Explain.””

Daniel stared at it.

“You went through my things?””

“No.””

“Then who gave you this?””

I watched him.

Again.

The first question was never about hurting me.

It was always about controlling the damage.

“You don’t get to ask that.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice stayed calm.

“That’s what you don’t understand. I spent years explaining myself to you.””

He looked hurt.

“I loved you.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

That seemed to surprise him.

“Then why are you doing this?””

“Because loving someone doesn’t mean accepting everything they do.””

His eyes filled slightly.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

He looked down.

“I was under pressure.””

“From who?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked closer.

“Your mother?””

His silence was louder than words.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

I saw the name.

*Mom.*

He rejected the call.

A second later, it rang again.

And again.

Finally, he answered.

“What?””

I watched his face change.

His confidence disappeared.

“What do you mean she knows?””

My heart stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

He realized his mistake too late.

“Mom, calm down.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell her I’m here.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

I smiled coldly.

“Tell Evelyn I’m here.””

May you like

He lowered the phone.

And for the first time since I met him, Daniel looked afraid of me.
