Chapter 13: The Truth They Buried
I opened the door slowly.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I wanted them to see my face when I heard whatever excuse they had prepared.
Evelyn stood on the porch wearing a long winter coat, her expression unusually uncertain.
Beside her, Claire looked like she hadn’t slept.
Daniel stood behind them.
For the first time, they didn’t look like a family united against me.
They looked like people who had been caught.
Evelyn spoke first.
“Sarah.””
I stared at her.
The woman who had slapped me.
The woman who had spent years making me feel small.
The woman who believed she could control my life.
“What truth?””
She opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
I almost laughed.
Even now.
Even after everything.
She was still choosing her words carefully.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Can we come inside?””
“No.””
His face changed.
“Sarah, it’s freezing.””
“So?””
The silence that followed was uncomfortable.
Good.
For once, they could feel uncomfortable.
Claire looked down.
“I know you hate us right now.””
I looked at her.
“Hate?””
My voice was quiet.
“I don’t even know what to call what you did.””
She swallowed.
“That’s fair.””
I almost couldn’t believe she admitted it.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“You don’t understand the whole situation.””
I looked at her.
“Then explain.””
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Claire whispered:
“I have a daughter.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
Her eyes widened.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
She looked at Daniel.
“You told her?””
“No,” I said.
“I found out because everyone kept secrets badly.””
That hurt.
I saw it on her face.
But I didn’t care anymore.
Claire hugged herself.
“My daughter’s father is your brother.””
I nodded again.
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But you don’t know why.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell me.””
She took a deep breath.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then Evelyn.
Then me.
“Of losing my daughter.””
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Claire’s voice broke.
“Your brother wanted custody.””
I froze.
“What?””
She nodded.
“He said I wasn’t stable enough. He said he had evidence against me.””
I stared at her.
“And Daniel helped you?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Claire looked away.
“He gave me information.””
My stomach tightened.
“What information?””
“About your brother’s finances.””
I shook my head.
“So what does this have to do with destroying my marriage?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Because your brother found out.””
The pieces started moving.
“He threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“And you?””
“I panicked.””
I looked at her.
“So you joined them.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t want to.””
“But you did.””
The words were harsh.
But true.
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
Evelyn stepped in.
“Claire was trying to protect her child.””
“And I was what?””
Evelyn went silent.
I stepped closer.
“What was I?””
Nobody answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
Collateral.
I looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
His face was full of regret.
“I wanted to stop it.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
He looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“That’s the only thing you’re honest about.””
Daniel flinched.
I walked back inside and grabbed the folder from the table.
I placed it in front of them.
“You all created a plan.””
Nobody denied it.
“You collected information about me.””
Silence.
“You tried to make me look unstable.””
Silence.
“You planned to take my home.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“Sorry doesn’t rebuild trust.””
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“I know.””
Then Evelyn said something unexpected.
“We weren’t the only ones.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“Your father changed everything.””
My chest tightened.
“I already know about him.””
“No.””
Her voice became serious.
“You don’t.””
I stared.
“What else?””
She looked terrified.
And for the first time, I realized something.
Evelyn wasn’t afraid of me.
She was afraid of what I would learn.
“Your father didn’t just give us information about you.””
She swallowed.
“He gave us information about your mother.””
My blood ran cold.
“My mother?””
Evelyn nodded.
“He said if we needed to control you, we needed to understand where you came from.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Tell me.””
Nobody moved.
May you like
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Your mother wasn’t the person you thought she was.””
