Chapter 9: The File Hidden Under the Floor

After Lily said Sophie’s name, I couldn’t sleep.

Not because I was afraid of Vanessa.

Because I was afraid of what else my daughter knew.

Children don’t create fear from nothing.

They absorb it.

They remember things adults think they never noticed.

The next morning, I asked Lily to sit with me.

We were at my mother’s kitchen table.

Sunlight came through the window.

Everything looked normal.

That almost made it worse.

“Sweetheart, can you tell Mommy about Sophie?””

Lily looked down.

“Grandma Vanessa said I shouldn’t talk about her.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“She said people who talk too much lose things.””

I felt anger rise.

But I kept my voice calm.

“What things?””

Lily touched her stuffed rabbit’s ear.

“People.””

I immediately called Officer Reynolds.

Within an hour, we were back at the house.

The police searched every room again.

This time, they weren’t looking for cameras.

They were looking for evidence.

Daniel arrived while they were searching.

I almost told him to leave.

But Reynolds stopped me.

“We need his cooperation.””

Daniel looked around the house.

Everything seemed different now.

The walls.

The rooms.

The memories.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.

I didn’t answer.

An officer called from upstairs.

“We found something.””

Everyone moved toward Lily’s old room.

The officer was kneeling near the bookshelf.

“There’s a loose floorboard.””

My heart started racing.

The same room.

The same place.

The same hidden world Vanessa had created.

They lifted the board.

Underneath was a small metal box.

Daniel stepped back.

“I didn’t know that was there.””

Nobody believed him.

Inside the box were documents.

Photos.

USB drives.

And a notebook.

Officer Reynolds opened it carefully.

The first page had one sentence written in black ink.

Children need someone willing to make decisions for them.

I felt sick.

He flipped through the pages.

Names filled every page.

Dates.

Notes.

Observations.

Not about children.

About weaknesses.

“Mother is emotional.””

“Father is easy to influence.””

“Family lacks support.””

My hands shook.

“She studied us.””

Reynolds nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked pale.

“She studied me.””

I looked at him.

“She used you.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

The officer picked up one photograph.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It was a picture of Vanessa.

Holding a baby.

I looked closer.

The baby had a hospital bracelet.

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized the blanket.

The same pink blanket Lily had come home from the hospital in.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

The photograph had a date.

The date was seventeen years ago.

Before Lily was born.

Officer Reynolds looked at me.

“Do you know this baby?””

My hands trembled.

“I don’t know.””

But deep inside, something felt wrong.

Something about that blanket.

Something about Vanessa holding that baby.

Then the notebook fell open.

A folded paper slipped out.

Reynolds picked it up.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

My stomach dropped.

“What does it say?””

He slowly handed me the paper.

At the top was a name.

My name.

Below it was a sentence.

The child returned after eighteen years.

I stared at the words.

They made no sense.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

“What did she show you?””

He didn’t answer.

Because at that moment, his phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face turned completely white.

“What?””

He slowly turned the phone toward us.

It was a message from Vanessa.

One sentence.

I know you found the truth.

And underneath it was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

May you like

Taken inside my house.

Of Lily sleeping.
