Chapter 13: The Man Behind the Missing Years
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The old hospital hallway felt frozen in time.
The man’s voice still echoed through the phone.
Daniel Carter knows exactly who took my granddaughter.
I looked at my husband.
The person I had shared a home with.
The person who had held our children.
The person who had watched Lily suffer.
“Daniel,” I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
Officer Reynolds stepped closer.
“Who is the caller?””
Vanessa smiled.
“My father.””
The officer looked at her.
“Your father?””
She nodded.
“He knows everything.””
Daniel suddenly moved toward the phone.
“Turn that off.””
Officer Reynolds blocked him.
“Why?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Because he realized everyone saw it.
He wasn’t confused.
He wasn’t shocked.
He was afraid.
The voice on the phone spoke again.
“Daniel?””
The man sounded older now.
Tired.
“You’re there, aren’t you?””
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“You know him?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know who he is.””
I felt something inside me crack.
“How?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice echoed down the hallway.
“You keep using that excuse.””
His eyes filled.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Of her.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Now you’re blaming me?””
I stared at Daniel.
“Tell me the truth.””
He swallowed.
Then he finally said the words.
“I knew Vanessa before we met.””
The confession hurt more than I expected.
“How much before?””
“Years.””
My hands went cold.
“How many?””
“Almost eighteen.””
The hallway became silent.
Officer Reynolds looked at him.
“You’re saying you knew about Mrs. Carter’s history before your marriage?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
He reached toward me.
I moved away.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I didn’t know at first.””
“You knew eventually.””
“Yes.””
“And you stayed.””
His face collapsed.
“Yes.””
The phone remained on speaker.
The older man spoke.
“My name is Thomas Whitmore.””
Vanessa’s last name.
My last clue.
Thomas continued.
“Eighteen years ago, my daughter made a mistake.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
But Thomas ignored her.
“She gave birth to a child and believed she could control what happened next.””
I looked at Vanessa.
My biological mother.
The woman who had hurt my daughter.
The woman who had spent years manipulating families.
“Why did you give me away?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
For a moment, I saw something almost human.
Regret.
Then it disappeared.
“Because I was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked away.
“Because I wasn’t ready.””
I shook my head.
“And Lily?””
Her expression changed.
“She reminded me of what I lost.””
My anger returned.
“She was a child.””
“I know.””
“Then why hurt her?””
Vanessa’s eyes became cold.
“Because she loved you.””
The words made no sense.
“She loved me?””
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
“She had what I never had.””
Her voice lowered.
“A mother who chose her.””
The room went silent.
That was the first honest thing Vanessa had ever said.
And somehow it was the most terrifying.
Officer Reynolds turned to Daniel.
“What role did you play?””
Daniel looked broken.
“I didn’t take her.””
“Then what did you do?””
He looked at me.
“I helped hide the truth.””
I felt numb.
“How?””
He swallowed.
“When Vanessa found me, she told me about you.””
“Why you?””
“She wanted someone close to you.””
My heart sank.
“You married me because of her.””
“No.””
His answer came instantly.
“I loved you.””
But it was too late.
Love without truth was another kind of betrayal.
“I did love you,” he continued.
“But I was already trapped.””
I looked at Lily’s picture on my phone.
My little girl.
My reason to keep standing.
Then Thomas spoke again.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I turned toward the phone.
“Yes?””
“There is something else.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“Vanessa didn’t act alone.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
Thomas continued.
“There was someone who helped erase your records.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
The line went quiet.
May you like
Then Thomas said:
“The person who adopted you.””
