Chapter 10: The Truth Hidden in My Birth Records
The photograph on Daniel’s phone burned into my mind.
Lily was asleep in her bed.
Her stuffed rabbit was tucked beneath her chin.
The blanket was pulled over her shoulders.
Someone had taken that picture from inside my house.
Not outside.
Not through the window.
Inside.
My hands started shaking.
“How long ago was this taken?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“Five minutes ago.””
Officer Reynolds immediately reached for his radio.
“Everyone out. Now.””
The house exploded into movement.
Officers checked every room.
Closets.
Bathrooms.
The basement.
Every corner where a person could hide.
I stood frozen in the hallway, staring at Lily’s bedroom door.
I wanted to run inside.
I wanted to pick her up and never let her go.
But Reynolds stopped me.
“Wait.””
“She could be in there.””
“We need to make sure the room is safe.””
Those words almost broke me.
Safe.
A bedroom was supposed to be safe.
A home was supposed to be safe.
A mother was supposed to know when her child was in danger.
After several minutes, an officer came out.
“She’s clear.””
I rushed inside.
Lily opened her eyes.
“Mommy?””
I grabbed her and held her so tightly she complained.
“Too tight.””
I immediately loosened my arms.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked confused.
“Did something happen?””
I kissed her forehead.
“No.””
But the lie tasted terrible.
Children know when adults are scared.
They just don’t always know why.
Later that night, we moved Lily and her brother to a secure location.
Daniel stayed behind with the investigators.
I didn’t trust him.
But I also knew something had changed.
He was afraid of Vanessa now.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
The next morning, Officer Reynolds arrived with a new report.
“We found the source of the birth record.””
I looked at him.
“And?””
He placed a folder on the table.
“Your adoption records were altered.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
“It means someone accessed your original documents.””
“Who?””
He looked at the papers.
“Vanessa.””
I closed my eyes.
“How?””
“We’re still investigating.””
I opened the folder.
There were copies of documents I had never seen.
Hospital records.
Agency forms.
Names I didn’t recognize.
Then I saw something.
A handwritten note.
My fingers froze.
“What is this?””
Reynolds looked at it.
“That was attached to your original file.””
I read the words.
Baby girl transferred under private arrangement.
No further contact permitted.
I looked up.
“Private arrangement?””
“Yes.””
“That’s not normal.””
“No.””
The room felt smaller.
I had spent my entire life believing my adoption was a mystery.
A sad story.
A tragedy.
I never imagined it was a secret.
My mother sat beside me.
“I’m sorry.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
She grabbed my hand.
“I knew your adoption records were incomplete. I knew your birth parents were never found.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
The word hurt.
“Afraid of what?””
She looked at the papers.
“That someone had intentionally hidden the truth.””
That afternoon, Daniel finally told me everything.
Not over the phone.
Not through messages.
Face-to-face.
He looked exhausted.
“I met Vanessa before we met.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“She contacted me when I was struggling financially.””
My chest tightened.
“You’re saying she found you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
He looked down.
“But she knew about you.””
“About me?””
“She knew you were adopted.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What else?””
“She said you were special.””
I felt sick.
“Special?””
“She said your life was connected to something she had been trying to fix for years.””
I stared at him.
“She used you.””
“I know.””
“She used Lily.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
For once, he didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t make excuses.
He just looked broken.
“I thought she was helping me.””
“You thought money was worth trusting someone who watched our daughter suffer?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No.””
A silence followed.
Then Daniel said:
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She has a daughter.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A biological daughter.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Vanessa never talks about her.””
“Why?””
“Because she died.””
The room went quiet.
“How?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She was a baby.””
I waited.
Then he said:
“Her name was Lily.””
I felt the world stop.
“What did you say?””
“Vanessa’s daughter was named Lily.””
My hands went cold.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
I stood up.
“That’s impossible.””
But the documents.
The photograph.
The secrets.
Everything connected.
Then Officer Reynolds rushed into the room.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I turned.
His face was serious.
“We found Vanessa.””
My heart jumped.
“Where?””
May you like
He looked at Daniel.
“She’s at the old hospital where you were born.””
