Chapter 11: The Hospital Where It Started

The hospital had been abandoned for years.

The paint peeled from the walls.

The windows were covered with dust.

The sign outside was barely readable.

But according to Officer Reynolds, Vanessa had been inside for almost three hours.

Waiting.

“She wanted us to find her,” he said.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because people like Vanessa don’t run when they think they’re winning.””

The words made me uncomfortable.

Because he was right.

She wanted a final conversation.

A final performance.

Inside the hospital, every hallway felt like walking through someone else’s nightmare.

My nightmare.

The maternity wing was closed off.

Old rooms lined the corridor.

Room numbers.

Empty beds.

Broken equipment.

Then we heard a voice.

“You finally came.””

Vanessa stood at the end of the hallway.

She looked different.

Older.

Tired.

But still calm.

Still confident.

Officer Reynolds stepped forward.

“Vanessa, you’re under investigation.””

She smiled.

“Investigation?””

Her eyes moved to me.

“I knew she would come.””

I felt anger rise.

“You took pictures of my daughter.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“She’s beautiful.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t talk about her.””

“She looks just like you.””

The words made me freeze.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“You still don’t know.””

Officer Reynolds raised his hand.

“Enough.””

But Vanessa ignored him.

She looked only at me.

“I tried to protect her.””

I laughed.

“You hurt her.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“I protected her from becoming like you.””

My stomach tightened.

“Like me?””

“You were always going to find out.””

I looked at her.

“Find out what?””

She walked toward an old nurses’ station.

Then she placed a file on the counter.

“You were never supposed to know.””

Officer Reynolds carefully picked it up.

Inside was an old hospital record.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He hesitated.

Then he read.

“Mother’s name: Vanessa Whitmore.””

My world went silent.

I stared at the paper.

“No.””

Vanessa watched my face.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“You were my daughter.””

The hallway disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Only those words.

My daughter.

My knees almost gave out.

“That’s not possible.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked emotional.

“I lost you.””

I backed away.

“You gave me away.””

Her face hardened.

“You were taken from me.””

Officer Reynolds looked between us.

“Vanessa, explain.””

She ignored him.

“They told me you died.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

“Your adoptive parents.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

She pointed at the file.

“Look.””

I couldn’t.

I didn’t want to.

Because a part of me was terrified that I would believe her.

That I would find some impossible truth hidden in those pages.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Why would you hurt her daughter?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because she wasn’t grateful.””

I felt sick.

“She was a child.””

“She needed discipline.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“She needed love.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Something dark appeared.

“You never understood.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know what love is.””

The officers moved closer.

Then Vanessa laughed softly.

“You think this ends with me?””

Everyone stopped.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at Daniel.

“He knows.””

Daniel went pale.

I turned.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask him who Lily’s biological father is.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

May you like

“Daniel?””

His silence answered before his words did.
