Chapter 2: The House That Wasn’t Safe
I spent the entire night sitting beside Lily’s bed.
I didn’t sleep.
Every time she moved, I opened my eyes.
Every time she made a sound, I checked if she was crying.
My daughter was four years old.
Four.
She should have been worried about cartoons, birthday cakes, and losing her favorite stuffed rabbit.
She should not have known how to apologize before anyone accused her of anything.
The next morning, I watched the sunrise through my mother’s kitchen window while Lily colored at the table.
She drew our family.
Me.
Her little brother.
Her.
And then, after a long pause, she drew Daniel.
I stared at the picture.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“Yes, Mommy?””
“Why did you draw Daddy so far away?””
She shrugged.
“Because he doesn’t like when I bother him.””
My throat tightened.
“Did Daddy ever hurt you?””
Her crayon stopped moving.
“No.””
The relief lasted less than a second.
Then she whispered:
“He just lets Grandma Vanessa do it.””
I closed my eyes.
That sentence hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.
Because children understand cruelty.
But betrayal?
That takes longer.
Later that morning, the investigator, Mark Reynolds, came to my mother’s house.
He placed several photographs on the table.
Images from the cameras.
“Mrs. Carter, we reviewed the footage from the first camera.””
My hands gripped the edge of the table.
“And?””
He hesitated.
“We found months of recordings.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“Months?””
Mark nodded.
“Vanessa installed these cameras shortly after moving in.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
He opened a folder.
“There are recordings of your daughter being forced to clean, cook, and watch the baby while adults were present.””
I felt sick.
“She’s four.””
“I know.””
“And Daniel knew?””
Mark looked down.
“That’s something we’re investigating.””
I already knew the answer.
But I needed him to say it.
That afternoon, Daniel came to my mother’s house.
He didn’t come alone.
Vanessa was with him.
The moment they walked through the door, Lily disappeared behind my chair.
Daniel noticed.
His face changed slightly.
“Lily?””
She didn’t answer.
“Come here.””
She shook her head.
That was when I realized my daughter wasn’t just scared of Vanessa.
She was scared of him too.
Daniel looked at me.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I stared at him.
“A mistake?””
“You’re destroying our family.””
I laughed quietly.
The sound surprised even me.
“Our family?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You’re letting your mother manipulate you.””
My mother stood.
“No. I watched what happened.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“She was being taught responsibility.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“She’s four.””
“She needs structure.””
“She needed a mother protecting her.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You’re making Vanessa look like a monster.””
I looked at him.
“She hit our daughter.””
He didn’t answer.
That silence told me everything.
Mark had warned me not to confront them until the investigation was complete.
But I needed to ask.
“Daniel, how long did you know?””
His eyes shifted.
“Know what?””
“How long did you know Lily was afraid of Vanessa?””
He looked away.
And that was his answer.
Vanessa suddenly became angry.
“This is ridiculous.””
She grabbed her purse.
“You’re ruining my life because of one misunderstanding.””
“One misunderstanding doesn’t create hidden cameras,” I said.
Her face froze.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
She knew.
Before leaving, Daniel stopped near the doorway.
“You’ll regret this.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I held Lily’s hand.
“I regret trusting you.””
After they left, Mark called me later that evening.
His voice sounded different.
More serious.
“Mrs. Carter, we found something else.””
I sat down.
“What?””
“The camera footage wasn’t only focused on Lily.””
My heart dropped.
“What do you mean?””
“There are recordings from before you moved in.””
I frowned.
“Before?””
“Yes.””
He paused.
“And there’s something you need to know about another child.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What child?””
The silence lasted too long.
Then Mark finally spoke.
“The previous family who lived in that house.””
I felt a chill.
“What about them?””
His voice lowered.
“Their daughter disappeared from their lives three years ago.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
May you like
Then he said the words I would never forget.
“Mrs. Carter, we believe Vanessa may have been hiding something in that house for a very long time.””
