Chapter 9: The Father Who Disappeared

Nobody spoke.

Not even my mother.

The screen showed my father sitting in Room 214 like he belonged there.

Like he hadn’t been missing from my life for years.

I barely remembered his face.

Only pieces.

A deep voice.

A blue jacket.

A hand holding mine when I was little.

Then nothing.

He disappeared.

And Mom never explained why.

I stared at the screen.

“Is that him?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

Jamal looked at her.

“You knew he was alive?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My brother stepped back.

“You knew?””

“I found out recently.””

“Recently?””

My mother looked at him.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Jamal laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

The video continued.

My father leaned closer to the camera.

“I know you’re angry.””

I almost turned away.

But I couldn’t.

“Your mother probably told you she made mistakes.””

He smiled sadly.

“She did.””

My fists tightened.

Then he said something unexpected.

“But she wasn’t the person who betrayed this family.””

Everyone looked at the screen.

My father placed a folder on the desk.

“The truth is inside.””

Daniel immediately moved toward the computer.

“We need to trace the signal.””

Officer Harris nodded.

While the officers worked, we kept watching.

My father opened the folder.

“Malik, you deserve to know what happened.””

He looked down.

“When I discovered the student profiling system, I tried to expose it.””

My mother whispered.

“David…”

So his name was David.

A stranger who was somehow my father.

David continued.

“I thought the truth would be enough.””

He shook his head.

“I was wrong.””

A second video appeared beside him.

Documents.

Emails.

Photos.

Names.

Then one image appeared.

My father standing with Victoria Hale.

And Richard.

My stomach dropped.

“They worked together.””

Jamal nodded.

“I knew Richard was involved.””

My father’s voice continued.

“But the person who brought them together was someone closer than I expected.””

The screen glitched.

Then a name appeared.

*ELENA CARTER.*

My mother’s name.

I stared.

“No.””

My mother looked broken.

“Malik…”

“What is that?””

She couldn’t answer.

Jamal looked confused too.

“Mom?””

My father’s video continued.

“Your mother didn’t create the corruption.””

A pause.

“But she helped build the foundation.””

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

“I was young.””

Nobody spoke.

“I thought I was helping children.””

My father continued.

“Then she discovered what they were really doing.””

Maya whispered.

“So she tried to stop them.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Then why does the document have her name?””

“Because they needed someone to blame.””

The room went quiet.

Victoria smiled.

“I warned you this would happen.””

Everyone turned.

She was standing nearby with officers.

She looked at my mother.

“You always wanted to be the hero.””

My mother stared at her.

“And you always wanted power.””

Victoria smiled.

“Power is just another word for influence.””

Officer Harris stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But Victoria wasn’t finished.

She looked at me.

“Malik, you keep searching for one person to blame.””

She shook her head.

“You should be asking why so many people allowed this to happen.””

I hated that part of her words made sense.

Because everyone had looked away.

Teachers.

Administrators.

Adults.

Even my own family.

Then my father’s video continued.

The final file opened.

A list appeared.

Students.

Hundreds of names.

At the bottom was a section titled:

*Future Targets.*

My name was there.

So was Maya’s.

So was Jamal’s.

But one name appeared above all others.

The first person marked for removal.

I read it slowly.

Then my heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t a student.

It wasn’t a teacher.

It was:

*David Carter.*

My father.

Jamal stepped closer.

“That means…”

My mother whispered.

“They weren’t trying to hide what they did to students.””

She looked at the screen.

“They were trying to erase everyone who could expose them.””

Suddenly, every light in the district office turned off.

The screen went black.

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Officer Harris drew his flashlight.

“Everyone stay here.””

The door slowly opened.

Someone stepped inside.

Holding the missing original files.

And wearing a school security uniform.

Then the person said:

“I know who really started this.””

Maya whispered:

“Who are you?””

The person stepped into the light.

And I recognized the face.

It was the one adult nobody had suspected.

May you like

My old science teacher.

Mrs. Carter.
