Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Recording

The classroom stayed silent after Jamal’s voice disappeared.

Nobody moved.

Nobody even breathed loudly.

The words hung in the air like smoke.

*The person who started all of this is someone inside our own family.*

I stared at the frozen screen.

My mother’s face flashed through my mind.

The way she packed my lunch every morning.

The way she sat beside my bed when I was sick.

The way she fought for me when nobody else did.

That couldn’t be true.

“Stop the video,” I whispered.

Officer Harris looked at me.

“Malik—”

“Please.””

He pressed pause.

The screen went black.

Mrs. Dalton immediately stepped forward.

“See? This proves nothing.””

Officer Harris turned sharply.

“Actually, it proves there’s more happening here.””

“No,” Mrs. Dalton said.

“It proves these children are confused and manipulating old files.””

Maya looked at her.

“You’re scared.””

Mrs. Dalton’s eyes moved toward her.

“Excuse me?””

“You’re scared because you don’t know what else we found.””

For a second, Mrs. Dalton didn’t have a response.

That was the first time I saw her lose control.

Daniel Reed picked up the flash drive.

“This file was hidden for a reason.””

Principal Williams shook his head.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Then explain it.””

The principal stayed quiet.

Officer Harris stepped closer.

“Everyone involved needs to answer questions.””

He pointed toward the door.

“Mrs. Dalton. Principal Williams. You’re both coming with me.””

Mrs. Dalton laughed.

“You think you can walk me out because of a child’s story?””

Officer Harris didn’t react.

“No. I think I can walk you out because of evidence.””

The confidence disappeared from her face.

As they moved toward the door, Mrs. Dalton stopped beside me.

She lowered her voice.

“You really think your family is innocent?””

I looked up at her.

She smiled.

“You don’t know everything about them.””

Then she walked away.

I hated that her words bothered me.

Because somewhere deep inside, I knew there was a reason Jamal recorded that message.

And I needed to know what it was.

After the police separated everyone, Daniel took Maya and me to an empty conference room.

The school suddenly felt different.

The same halls where I used to worry about being late now felt like they were hiding secrets.

Daniel placed the flash drive on the table.

“Your brother was investigating this for months.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because he contacted me before he disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“Disappeared?””

Maya looked confused.

“Wait. Jamal disappeared?””

I looked down.

“He left home last year.””

I never told many people.

Not even Maya.

Everyone thought Jamal moved away for college.

But the truth was different.

He left after the laptop incident.

After the school labeled him a thief.

After everyone looked at him like he was guilty.

Daniel opened his folder.

“He didn’t leave because he wanted to.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel hesitated.

“It means someone convinced him he had no choice.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

“We need to watch the rest.””

Maya sat beside me.

“I’m staying.””

I looked at her.

“You don’t have to.””

“Yes, I do.””

“Why?””

She shrugged.

“Because you stayed when everyone else looked away.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Daniel connected the drive again.

The video continued.

The image was shaky.

It looked like someone recorded it secretly.

Jamal appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

His voice was quiet.

“Malik, if you’re seeing this, I need you to know something.””

I leaned closer.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

My eyes burned.

“I know.””

But hearing him say it made it real.

Jamal continued.

“The laptop wasn’t about the laptop.””

The video flickered.

“It was about the files stored inside.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What files?””

The video continued.

“Mrs. Dalton and Principal Williams have been changing student records.””

Maya covered her mouth.

“Changing records?””

Jamal nodded on screen.

“They erase complaints. They change disciplinary reports. They make students look guilty.””

My hands curled into fists.

“That’s why Mom complained.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Exactly.””

Jamal continued.

“But someone helped them.””

The screen froze briefly.

Then his voice returned.

“And that person is—”

Static covered the sound.

Everyone leaned forward.

“No,” Maya whispered.

Daniel checked the file.

“It’s corrupted.””

My heart sank.

The most important part was missing.

Then suddenly, another audio track appeared.

A woman’s voice.

A familiar voice.

“Jamal, you need to stop.””

I froze.

Maya looked at me.

“Malik?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I recognized it.

It was my mother.

The recording continued.

“You don’t understand what will happen if you expose them.””

Jamal sounded angry.

“I understand exactly what will happen. They’ll keep hurting kids.””

My mother’s voice became quieter.

“You don’t know what they threatened to do.””

The room went cold.

Daniel paused the video.

“What?””

I stared at him.

“My mom was afraid.””

Maya whispered.

“Afraid of who?””

Before anyone could answer, Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

He stood up.

“What happened?””

A few seconds passed.

Then he looked at me.

“Malik…”

I knew something was wrong.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your mother is at the police station.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

May you like

He looked down.

“She turned herself in.””
