Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Door

Nobody spoke after the message appeared.

My mother covered her mouth.

Maya grabbed my arm.

Daniel immediately took the phone from Officer Harris.

“When was this sent?””

“Three minutes ago.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“He knows we found the files.””

My heart was pounding.

“But where is Jamal?””

Nobody answered.

That was the worst part.

Not knowing.

Officer Harris called for backup while Daniel examined the message.

My mother looked terrified.

“I should have told you everything sooner.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“By keeping secrets?””

She flinched.

I regretted saying it.

But I was hurt.

I had spent months thinking my brother abandoned us.

Thinking my family fell apart for no reason.

And all this time, adults were fighting battles and keeping me in the dark.

My mother whispered.

“I was wrong.””

That was the first honest thing anyone had said all day.

Two hours later, we were back at the school.

Officer Harris believed Richard might return.

The security footage showed someone entering through the side entrance.

The same entrance near the old technology room.

The room where school records were stored.

Maya looked at the monitor.

“He’s deleting evidence.””

Officer Harris nodded.

“Probably.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You don’t have to come closer.””

I shook my head.

“I need to know.””

He studied my face.

Then nodded.

We walked through the empty hallway.

Every step echoed.

The school felt completely different at night.

No students.

No laughter.

Just locked doors and hidden memories.

When we reached the technology room, we heard voices.

One voice was my uncle’s.

The other was Principal Williams.

My stomach dropped.

They were together.

Officer Harris raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

He listened.

Richard’s voice came through the door.

“This should have been handled months ago.””

Principal Williams sounded nervous.

“You said Jamal wouldn’t talk.””

“He didn’t.””

“Then why is his brother involved?””

A pause.

Then Richard answered.

“Because Malik is smarter than we expected.””

My blood ran cold.

He was talking about me.

Officer Harris opened the door.

“Step away from the computer.””

Richard froze.

My uncle turned around.

For a second, he looked surprised.

Then he smiled.

A familiar smile.

The same one he used at family dinners.

“Malik.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His smile faded.

“Why what?””

“Why did you do this?””

Richard sighed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No. I understand enough.””

He looked at my mother.

“This is what I warned you about.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You threatened my son.””

Richard shook his head.

“I protected this family.””

“By destroying your nephews?””

His face hardened.

“You think the world is fair? You think telling the truth always wins?””

Officer Harris moved closer.

“That doesn’t justify what you did.””

Richard looked around the room.

Then he laughed quietly.

“You’re all missing the bigger picture.””

Daniel frowned.

“What bigger picture?””

Richard pointed at the computer.

“The files you found?””

Nobody moved.

“They’re only part of it.””

He clicked a folder.

A new screen appeared.

Hundreds of names.

Hundreds of students.

My stomach turned.

“What is that?””

Richard smiled.

“The real project.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Project?””

Richard looked at her.

“You wanted the truth?””

He clicked another file.

A document opened.

At the top was a title.

*STUDENT BEHAVIOR PREDICTION PROGRAM*

Daniel’s face changed.

“This can’t be real.””

Richard smiled.

“It is.””

Officer Harris stared at the screen.

“You were ranking students?””

“Predicting problems before they happened.””

My voice shook.

“You mean deciding who was guilty before they did anything.””

Richard didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because we all understood.

The door behind us suddenly slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

Another person was standing there.

Someone nobody expected.

Someone holding a flash drive.

Jamal.

Alive.

But his face was bruised.

And the first words he said were:

“Malik… don’t trust him.””

May you like

He pointed directly at Richard.

“Because he isn’t the only one who betrayed us.””
