Chapter 7: The Brother Who Came Back

For three seconds, nobody moved.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Jamal.

My brother.

The person I had spent a year wondering about.

The person I thought had left us.

He was standing in the doorway of the technology room, holding a flash drive in one hand and looking like he had been fighting a battle nobody knew existed.

“Jamal…”

My voice cracked.

He looked at me.

And for the first time in months, I saw my brother’s face clearly.

Not the pictures.

Not the memories.

Him.

Alive.

“Mali,” he whispered.

I ran toward him.

I didn’t care who was watching.

I didn’t care about Richard.

I didn’t care about the school.

I hugged him so tightly my arms hurt.

“You’re alive.””

Jamal closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

“Why did you leave?””

His face changed.

Because that question hurt more than anything.

“I didn’t leave because I wanted to.””

I stepped back.

“Then why didn’t you call?””

He looked toward Richard.

“Because he made sure I couldn’t.””

Everyone turned.

Richard’s expression changed.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Jamal laughed bitterly.

“Still pretending?””

Officer Harris stepped between them.

“Everyone stays where they are.””

Richard raised his hands.

“I haven’t done anything.””

Jamal walked into the room.

“That’s your favorite sentence.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Jamal, what happened?””

My brother held up the flash drive.

“I found the original files.””

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Where?””

“Somewhere you couldn’t reach.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Your flash drive has the missing video?””

Jamal nodded.

“And more.””

Officer Harris took the drive.

“We’ll need to verify everything.””

Jamal looked at me.

“Malik, I need you to hear this from me.””

I swallowed.

“Okay.””

He looked exhausted.

“After the laptop incident, I found out the school wasn’t just changing records.””

He pointed toward the computer screen.

“They were creating profiles.””

The room became quiet.

“They picked students they thought would be easy targets.””

My chest tightened.

“Like me?””

Jamal nodded.

“Like you.””

I looked away.

It hurt hearing it.

Because deep down, I already knew.

Jamal continued.

“They didn’t need proof. They needed a story.””

Daniel looked at the files.

“A story that justified punishing certain students.””

“Exactly.””

Richard shook his head.

“You’re making assumptions.””

Jamal turned toward him.

“No.””

He pulled out his phone.

“I recorded you admitting it.””

Richard froze.

My uncle’s confidence disappeared.

Maya whispered.

“He recorded him?””

Jamal nodded.

“I knew nobody would believe me.””

He pressed play.

Richard’s voice filled the room.

“You should stop digging into things you don’t understand.””

Jamal’s voice answered.

“Are you threatening me?””

Richard replied:

“I’m warning you. Some families lose more than they can afford when they fight powerful people.””

The recording stopped.

Officer Harris stared at Richard.

“That sounds like a threat.””

Richard looked nervous for the first time.

“It was taken out of context.””

Jamal laughed.

“You always say that.””

I looked at my uncle.

The person who taught me how to throw a baseball.

The person who brought us dinner when Mom worked late.

The person I trusted.

“How could you?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

He ignored it.

It rang again.

Officer Harris held out his hand.

“Answer it.””

Richard hesitated.

Then slowly picked it up.

“Hello?””

A voice came through the speaker.

A woman.

“You need to leave now.””

Richard looked toward the door.

“I can’t.””

The woman lowered her voice.

“They found the files?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then she said something that made my blood freeze.

“Then you know what happens next.””

Richard looked scared.

“Don’t do this.””

The call ended.

Officer Harris immediately took the phone.

“Who was that?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Jamal stared at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

Jamal stepped closer.

“You weren’t the one in control.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked confused.

“Then who was?””

Jamal looked at the screen.

At the hundreds of student files.

Then he said:

“The person who created the entire system.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Jamal looked at me.

May you like

And his answer changed everything.

“Someone who works at the district office.””
