Chapter 2: The File Hidden for a Year

The second video was only twenty seconds long.

But it changed everything.

Maya connected her tablet to the classroom screen.

Everyone watched as old footage appeared.

The date in the corner was from the previous school year.

My hands went cold.

I recognized the hallway immediately.

It was the seventh-grade wing.

The same hallway where my older brother, Jamal, had been accused of stealing a teacher’s laptop.

The same accusation that forced him to transfer schools.

I had spent a year believing Jamal made a mistake.

But the video showed something else.

Jamal was standing beside a locker.

A teacher walked toward him.

Mrs. Dalton.

Even though she wasn’t his teacher.

“Stop right there,” she said.

Jamal looked confused.

“I didn’t do anything.””

“You were seen near the laptop.””

“That wasn’t me.””

Then Principal Williams appeared on the screen.

The same man standing in our classroom.

The same man who had just been exposed.

“Take him to the office,” he said.

The video froze.

The classroom was silent.

I looked at Maya.

“How did you get that?””

She looked nervous.

“Your brother gave it to me.””

My heart stopped.

“Jamal?””

“He found it last year. He knew something was wrong.””

“Then why didn’t he show anyone?””

Maya looked away.

“Because he was scared nobody would believe him.””

Officer Harris stepped closer to the screen.

“Where did this recording come from?””

Maya took a breath.

“The school server.””

Mrs. Dalton immediately spoke.

“She hacked school property.””

Maya turned toward her.

“No. I found a backup folder that wasn’t deleted.””

Mrs. Dalton’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“Actually,” Maya said, “I do.””

I had never heard Maya sound like that before.

She was usually quiet.

The kind of person who avoided attention.

But now she stood in front of everyone.

Fear was still there.

But something stronger was too.

Courage.

Officer Harris looked at Principal Williams.

“Why was this footage hidden?””

Principal Williams adjusted his tie.

“This is being misunderstood.””

“Misunderstood?”” Officer Harris asked.

“Yes. There were disciplinary reasons.””

“For a student who was never proven guilty?””

Principal Williams didn’t answer.

Mrs. Dalton stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. Two students are trying to destroy my career because they don’t like consequences.””

I looked at her.

“Consequences?””

My voice surprised me.

“You hit me because my mom couldn’t buy you a gift.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Watch your words.””

“No.””

The room became quiet.

“I was scared before,” I said.

“But I’m not anymore.””

Mrs. Dalton’s jaw tightened.

Officer Harris moved between us.

“Everyone needs to stay calm.””

Principal Williams picked up Maya’s tablet.

“This footage proves nothing.””

Maya shook her head.

“It proves there’s a pattern.””

She opened another folder.

“There are twelve more.””

Everyone looked at her.

“Twelve?””

Maya nodded.

“Different students. Different years.””

My stomach dropped.

“How long have you known?””

She hesitated.

“A month.””

I stared at her.

“A month?””

“I was looking into what happened to Jamal.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes softened.

“Because I knew you would try to confront them.””

She was right.

I probably would have.

Principal Williams suddenly grabbed the tablet.

“That’s enough.””

Officer Harris immediately reached for it.

“Give that back.””

The principal stopped.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

The classroom speaker crackled again.

A voice came through.

“Officer Harris?””

Everyone turned.

It was another security officer.

“Sir, you need to come to the main office.””

Harris frowned.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then the voice answered.

“Because someone just deleted the school security archives.””

My heart sank.

Officer Harris looked at the camera.

Then at Principal Williams.

“Who has access to those files?””

Nobody answered.

Maya slowly raised her hand.

“There’s only three people.””

“Who?””

She looked directly at Mrs. Dalton.

“Principal Williams, the technology administrator…”

She swallowed.

“And Mrs. Dalton.””

Mrs. Dalton smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“You children really think you’ve won.””

Officer Harris watched her carefully.

“What does that mean?””

She stepped closer.

“It means you’re missing one important detail.””

The classroom door opened.

A man in a dark suit stood outside.

He held a folder.

“Actually,” he said, “I think I can explain.””

Everyone turned.

The man looked at me.

Then at Maya.

Then he said something that made my entire body go numb.

“Malik Carter, your brother didn’t steal that laptop.””

May you like

He opened the folder.

“He was set up.””
