Chapter 8: The Hidden Connection

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

But it felt like an hour.

Mia grabbed my arm.

“Emily.””

“I’m here.””

My father moved immediately.

“Stay together.””

He pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

Then we heard something.

A sound from the back door.

A small click.

Dad’s face changed.

“Stay here.””

“No,” I whispered.

But he was already moving.

He walked slowly through the kitchen.

The flashlight beam shook slightly.

I had never seen my father afraid before.

Then he stopped.

The back door was open.

Wind moved the curtains.

Nobody was there.

But something was sitting on the floor.

An envelope.

Dad picked it up.

“Don’t touch it!””

I said it before I even knew why.

He looked at me.

Then carefully picked it up with a towel.

There was a name written on the front.

*Daniel Cross.*

Inside was one piece of paper.

And a photograph.

Dad looked at the photo first.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It showed Dad.

Years ago.

Standing beside Mark.

And another person.

A woman.

I didn’t recognize her.

“Who is she?””

Dad stared at the picture.

“That’s…”

He stopped.

“Dad?””

He looked like he couldn’t say the name.

Finally, he whispered:

“Rachel.””

I frowned.

“Who is Rachel?””

He looked at me.

“She worked at the company.””

“Why is she in this picture?””

Dad didn’t answer.

The silence was worse.

Mia looked between us.

“Dad?””

He sat down.

“Rachel was the person who discovered Mark’s theft.””

“So she helped you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why does she matter?””

My father looked at the photo again.

“Because Rachel disappeared after Mark was exposed.””

A cold feeling ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

The paper inside the envelope had only one sentence.

*Ask who really signed the transfer forms.*

Dad immediately grabbed the bank documents.

He spread them across the table.

The three of us looked.

There were signatures.

Dates.

Authorization records.

Then Mia pointed.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She touched one page.

“That signature isn’t Mom’s.””

My father leaned closer.

She was right.

The signature was similar.

But different.

My father grabbed a magnifying glass from the drawer.

He studied it.

“This was copied.””

My stomach turned.

“So Vanessa didn’t sign everything?””

“No.””

Dad looked furious.

“She signed some.””

He pointed at another page.

“But someone forged the rest.””

The front door suddenly opened again.

This time, Vanessa walked in.

She froze when she saw the papers.

“What happened?””

Dad looked at her.

“You didn’t sign this transfer.””

Her face went pale.

“What?””

“You didn’t authorize this.””

She stepped closer.

“I told you Mark helped me.””

“No.””

Dad held up the document.

“Someone used your information.””

Vanessa stared at it.

Then she whispered:

“I never saw this.””

Nobody moved.

Because for the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely scared.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Scared.

Then she reached into her purse.

“I have something else.””

Dad narrowed his eyes.

“What?””

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in my car yesterday.””

She placed it on the table.

“There was a note inside.””

Dad opened it.

His face changed as he read.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He just handed it to me.

The note contained only six words.

*You’re not the only victim, Emily.*

May you like

And underneath was a name.

A name that made my father drop into his chair.
