Chapter 14: The Final Account

Mark stepped into the room slowly.

He looked exactly like the man in the photograph.

Older.

Calmer.

But the same confidence.

The same cold smile.

My father immediately moved in front of me.

“You’re done.””

Mark laughed.

“Still protecting people who betray you, Daniel.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You used my wife.””

“I used everyone.””

The honesty shocked me.

Mark looked around the room.

“Vanessa. James. Even your own family.””

Vanessa looked down.

My mother stepped forward.

“Why?””

Mark looked at her.

“You found the evidence.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He smiled.

“You ruined everything I built.””

My father shook his head.

“You stole.””

Mark shrugged.

“Everyone steals.””

“No.””

My father’s voice was firm.

“Not everyone destroys families.””

Mark looked at me.

“You should blame your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He kept secrets.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

But Mark continued.

“Your mother wanted to expose me.””

He looked at my mother.

“She wanted to bring everything to the police.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

Mark smiled.

“And Daniel made a choice.””

I looked at my father.

“What choice?””

My father’s face changed.

“Emily…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“I need to hear it.””

Mark laughed quietly.

“Your father agreed to hide your mother’s identity.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

Dad looked at me.

“Because Mark threatened you.””

The room went silent.

Mark smiled.

“He knew I would hurt you.””

My father continued.

“I thought if everyone believed she was gone, you would be safe.””

My mother cried.

“But we never expected him to come after your accounts.””

Mark looked at me.

“That was the final step.””

“Why my money?””

He stared at me.

“Because your father loved you more than anything.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that have to do with my savings?””

Mark smiled.

“I wanted him to lose something.””

My father moved toward him.

“You’re sick.””

Mark laughed.

“No.””

He looked at the papers Rachel carried.

“I’m patient.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“You forgot one thing.””

Mark looked at her.

“What?””

“The evidence was never only on paper.””

Her phone was in her hand.

Mark’s expression changed.

“You recorded everything.””

Rachel nodded.

“Every confession.””

For the first time, Mark looked nervous.

My father took out his phone.

The police had already been contacted.

Mark looked around.

Then he laughed.

“You think this ends with me?””

Nobody answered.

Because we knew.

People like Mark never worked alone.

The police arrived minutes later.

Mark was taken away.

But before leaving, he looked at me.

“You’ll never understand what your family did.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I looked at my father.

“I understand enough.””

After everything was over, we sat together.

My mother.

My father.

Mia.

Me.

It was strange.

A family that had been broken for years was sitting in one room.

Trying to figure out how to start again.

My mother reached for my hand.

“I missed everything.””

I cried.

“I missed you too.””

She held my hand tighter.

“I’m sorry.””

“I know.””

That night, my father gave me the final bank report.

Every stolen dollar had been traced.

Every account.

Every transfer.

The laptop money was recovered.

The emergency funds were restored.

But there was one thing that bothered me.

One final transaction.

A transfer made before Mark was arrested.

My father looked at it carefully.

“What?””

He showed me.

A small amount.

Not money.

A message attached.

*You still don’t know the whole story.*

I looked at him.

“Who sent it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because the sender name appeared below.

And it wasn’t Mark.

It wasn’t James.

May you like

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was my mother.
