Chapter 11: The Signature From the Past

I stared at the paper.

My mother’s name was written at the bottom.

A signature I had seen on birthday cards.

School forms.

Old photographs.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“Emily.””

“That’s not possible.””

He took the paper back.

His face was pale.

“I don’t understand.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Neither do I.””

I looked at her.

“You said you found this?””

She nodded.

“In my car.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Dad stood up.

“This document is years old.””

He looked at Vanessa.

“How did Mark get this?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the paper again.

There was one sentence highlighted.

*Account access granted by legal guardian authorization.*

My heart sank.

“Legal guardian?””

Dad looked at me.

“Your mother.””

“But she’s gone.””

“I know.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Dad grabbed his phone.

“I’m calling the bank.””

The next hour felt endless.

When he finally hung up, his expression was different.

“What did they say?””

He sat down.

“They confirmed the document.””

I stared.

“What?””

“They said this account was created before your mother passed away.””

I felt confused.

“Why?””

Dad looked at the paper.

“It was a protection account.””

“For what?””

He took a breath.

“In case something happened to both of us.””

My eyes widened.

“But why would Mark know about it?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question.

Then Dad’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

I couldn’t hear everything.

But I heard one name.

Rachel.

My father stood immediately.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

Then his face changed.

“I’ll come.””

He ended the call.

“Who was it?””

He looked at us.

“Rachel.””

My heart jumped.

“She’s alive?””

He nodded.

“She wants to meet.””

Vanessa stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked terrified.

“Daniel, don’t go.””

“Why?””

“Because if Mark knows Rachel contacted you, he’ll know she’s helping you.””

Dad grabbed his jacket.

“I need answers.””

I stepped forward.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

“Dad.””

“Emily.””

His voice softened.

“This is dangerous.””

I looked at him.

“So was losing my savings.””

He stopped.

Because he knew I was right.

Mia stepped beside me.

“I’m coming too.””

Dad looked at both of us.

Then sighed.

“Fine. But we stay together.””

We met Rachel in a quiet coffee shop twenty minutes away.

At first, I barely recognized her.

The woman in the video looked exhausted.

This woman looked like someone who had been running for years.

When she saw my father, tears filled her eyes.

“Daniel.””

He sat down.

“What happened?””

Rachel looked at me.

Then at Mia.

“Mark’s plan was never about money.””

My father frowned.

“What?””

“He wanted control.””

She looked at me.

“Your father’s biggest weakness was trusting people.””

I felt uncomfortable.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked down.

“Mark knew if he couldn’t destroy Daniel’s company…”

She paused.

“He would destroy his family.””

My father leaned forward.

“How did he get Vanessa involved?””

Rachel sighed.

“Because Vanessa wasn’t the target.””

“Then who was?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

My blood ran cold.

“Emily.””

The entire table went silent.

“Me?””

Rachel nodded.

“Mark knew your account existed.””

“How?””

She looked at my father.

“Because someone inside your company gave him access.””

Dad’s face changed.

“Who?””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside was a list of names.

At the top was one name circled.

A person who worked for Daniel.

Someone close.

Someone they trusted.

Rachel whispered:

“This person helped Mark get everything.””

My father opened the folder.

May you like

Then he stopped breathing.

Because the name on the page was someone we knew.
