Chapter 1: The Missing Money

The day I found out my summer savings were gone, my stepmother was celebrating my stepsister’s new laptop like she had just won a prize.

I had spent three months earning every dollar of that money.

I was sixteen years old, living outside Dallas, and my summer looked nothing like my friends’ summers.

While they went to the lake, slept late, and posted pictures from vacations, I woke up before sunrise to catch the bus to the grocery store.

I stocked shelves until my hands hurt.

I pushed carts through the Texas heat.

I cleaned spills in aisles while customers walked past without noticing.

But every time I checked my savings account, I felt proud.

$2,340.

It wasn’t just money.

It was proof that I could build something for myself.

I had a plan.

A used laptop for school.

Books for my first semester at community college.

Maybe even enough left over to help with transportation.

My dad, Daniel, had helped me open the account when I turned sixteen.

“This is your future, Emily,” he told me.

“Learn to protect it.””

I believed him.

That was why, on a random afternoon in August, I opened my banking app expecting to see the number I had worked so hard for.

Instead, I saw:

$12.67.

For several seconds, I didn’t move.

I blinked.

I refreshed the screen.

Nothing changed.

My fingers started shaking.

“No,” I whispered.

I checked again.

$12.67.

I thought maybe the app was broken. Maybe the bank had made a mistake.

Then I saw the withdrawal history.

My stomach dropped.

A large transfer had been made two days earlier.

While I was working my double shift.

While my father was away on a three-day business trip.

I grabbed my phone and called him.

It rang.

No answer.

I tried again.

Still nothing.

Before I could leave another message, a loud scream came from downstairs.

“Oh my God! Mom!””

It was Mia.

My stepsister.

I walked toward the kitchen slowly.

And then I saw it.

A brand-new MacBook sat on the table, shining under the kitchen lights.

Mia was holding it like it was a trophy.

Vanessa, my stepmother, stood beside her with a proud smile.

“This is the exact one I wanted!”” Mia said.

She hugged Vanessa.

My chest tightened.

I looked from the laptop to Vanessa.

“How much was that?””

The smile on Vanessa’s face faded slightly.

“Why?””

I didn’t answer.

I unlocked my phone and showed her my bank balance.

Her expression changed.

“You took my money.””

Mia immediately closed the laptop.

“What?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“It was just sitting there.””

I stared at her.

“Just sitting there?””

My voice cracked.

“I worked three months for that.””

“Lower your voice, Emily.””

“That was for school.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Mia needed a laptop too.””

“She already has one.””

“Not a good one.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“You bought her a better laptop with my savings?””

Vanessa sighed like I was being difficult.

“You’re being dramatic.””

Mia looked uncomfortable.

“Mom…”

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Don’t start.””

I grabbed my phone again.

“I’m calling Dad.””

Her face hardened.

“Emily, don’t make this bigger than it is.””

But I had already pressed his name.

When Daniel answered, I could barely speak.

“Dad… something happened with my account.””

There was silence.

Then his voice changed.

“What happened?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me without fear.

That scared me more than anything.

“I think Vanessa took my money.””

The kitchen became completely silent.

Daniel came home that evening.

He didn’t even take off his jacket.

He walked straight into the kitchen.

“Vanessa.””

She looked up.

“Daniel.””

“Did you take money from Emily’s account?””

She didn’t deny it.

Not even for a second.

“She lives in this house.””

My father stared at her.

“So?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“So her money belongs to this family.””

The words hit me harder than the missing money.

My father’s face changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

He slowly pulled out his phone.

“That account requires my authorization for withdrawals.””

Vanessa’s confidence disappeared.

Daniel opened the banking app.

He scrolled.

His eyebrows tightened.

Then he looked at her.

“You didn’t just take Emily’s summer savings.””

Nobody spoke.

His voice became quiet.

“You transferred money from another account too.””

Vanessa went pale.

Mia looked between them.

“Mom…”

May you like

Her voice shook.

“What account?””
