Chapter 12: The Betrayal Nobody Expected
My father stared at the name.
I watched the color disappear from his face.
“Dad?””
He closed the folder.
“Not here.””
Rachel looked worried.
“You need to understand what happened.””
“Not here.””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Hurt.
That scared me.
On the drive home, nobody spoke.
Mia sat in the back seat quietly.
Vanessa stared out the window.
And my father kept both hands on the steering wheel.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.
“Who was it?””
No answer.
“Dad.””
He sighed.
“The person who helped Mark…”
He stopped.
Then said:
“Was someone I considered family.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
He looked at me through the mirror.
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“My Uncle James?””
He nodded.
I couldn’t believe it.
Uncle James had been around my entire life.
He came to birthdays.
He helped Dad with the company.
He gave me advice about school.
“No.””
My father looked broken.
“I wish it wasn’t true.””
When we got home, Dad immediately locked the doors.
Then he opened the folder again.
Rachel’s evidence was inside.
Emails.
Bank records.
Messages.
Proof.
James had been communicating with Mark for months.
Mia looked shocked.
“Why would Uncle James do that?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
Then his phone rang.
James.
Everyone looked at the screen.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Dad answered.
“Hello.””
James’ voice came through.
“Daniel.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Why did you do it?””
Silence.
Then James sighed.
“So you found out.””
I felt sick.
Dad stood.
“You stole from my daughter.””
James laughed softly.
“Your daughter?””
The way he said it made me uncomfortable.
“What does that mean?””
James didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“You never told Emily the whole story, did you?””
My father froze.
“What are you talking about?””
James continued.
“Ask her why her mother created that account.””
I looked at Dad.
“What?””
James laughed.
“Ask your brother, Daniel.””
Then the call ended.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at my father.
“Dad?””
He looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
“What does he mean?””
He sat down slowly.
“I don’t know.””
But I knew he was lying.
My father had never looked at me like that before.
Like he was afraid of what I would learn.
The next morning, I found him sitting alone with an old box.
A box I had never seen before.
“What is that?””
He looked up.
Then looked at the box.
“This belonged to your mother.””
My heart skipped.
“Why do you have it?””
He opened it slowly.
Inside were old letters.
Photos.
Documents.
Then he pulled out one envelope.
My name was written on it.
Emily.
My hands shook.
“That’s from Mom?””
He nodded.
“She told me not to give it to you until you were older.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because she wanted you to know the truth.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Dear Emily, if you are reading this, something happened that I hoped would never happen.*
I looked at my father.
“What is this about?””
He didn’t answer.
I continued reading.
And then I saw the sentence that changed everything.
*Your father is not the only person who has been protecting you from the truth.*
I looked up.
My father was crying.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
One photo.
One sentence.
The photo showed my mother.
Alive.
Standing beside someone.
May you like
And the message said:
*Your father lied. Your mother never died the way he told you.*
