Chapter 8: The Person Behind The Plan

My father didn’t sleep.

Neither did I.

We sat at the kitchen table until sunrise, surrounded by documents that looked more like evidence than family records.

The more we found, the worse it became.

Denise hadn’t made one mistake.

She had built a system.

A plan.

A way to slowly move money and assets without anyone noticing.

But the biggest question remained.

Who helped her?

My father held the document again.

“The company owner.””

I nodded.

“We need to find out who it is.””

He picked up his phone.

“I’m calling the attorney.””

The attorney’s office opened at nine.

We arrived twenty minutes early.

My father barely spoke during the drive.

I watched him stare out the window.

The same man who always had answers suddenly looked lost.

When we walked inside, an older man named Thomas greeted us.

He had handled my father’s legal paperwork for years.

“Robert, what happened?””

My father placed the documents on the desk.

“I need you to tell me the truth.””

Thomas looked concerned.

“About what?””

“This company.””

Thomas picked up the paper.

His face changed.

And that was when I knew.

He knew something.

My father noticed too.

“You recognize it.””

Thomas slowly sat down.

“Where did you get this?””

“Answer me.””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Robert…”

“Who created this company?””

The attorney was silent.

Then he said:

“Denise.””

My father closed his eyes.

I felt my stomach drop.

“But the owner isn’t her.””

“No.””

Thomas looked at me.

“The owner is listed as a trust.””

“What trust?””

He hesitated.

Then he answered.

“One created using your financial information.””

My father stood.

“What?””

Thomas rubbed his forehead.

“I thought you knew.””

“Knew what?””

The attorney looked between us.

“Three years ago, Denise came to me with documents.””

My father’s face turned cold.

“What documents?””

“She said you wanted to protect your assets.””

I felt anger rising.

“She lied.””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I realized that later.””

My father stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The attorney looked ashamed.

“Because the documents appeared legitimate.””

“Appeared?””

“Yes.””

He opened a drawer.

“I kept copies.””

He pulled out a folder.

Inside were more signatures.

More paperwork.

More lies.

My father flipped through them.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Thomas looked away.

“That’s the beneficiary page.””

My father looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means if something happened to you…”

Thomas paused.

“…the assets would go to the person listed there.””

My father’s hand tightened around the paper.

“Who?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

My father saw the name himself.

His face became completely still.

I leaned closer.

The name on the document made no sense.

Because it wasn’t Denise.

It wasn’t Ashley.

It wasn’t even someone connected to our family.

It was a man named Victor Hale.

I looked at my father.

“Who is Victor?””

My father didn’t respond.

“Dad?””

He slowly lowered the paper.

“I know him.””

“How?””

His voice became quiet.

“Because Victor was my best friend.””

The room went silent.

The same man who had been around our family for years.

The man who attended birthdays.

The man who helped my father after my mother died.

The man I remembered bringing gifts during holidays.

My father looked sick.

“I trusted him.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Robert, there’s something else.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

The attorney opened another file.

“This trust was created only days after Victor started working with Denise.””

I felt cold.

“They were working together.””

Thomas nodded.

“I believe so.””

My father stood up.

“Where is Denise now?””

I looked at him.

“What are you going to do?””

He grabbed the documents.

“Ask her why she destroyed my family.””

But before we reached the door, Thomas stopped us.

“Robert.””

My father turned.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

The attorney looked serious.

“Victor wasn’t just helping Denise.””

A pause.

“He was trying to take control of everything you own.””

My father stared.

“Everything?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your house. Your savings. Your retirement accounts.””

Then he placed one final document on the desk.

“And this was filed yesterday.””

My father picked it up.

I watched his expression change.

“What is it?””

He looked at me.

May you like

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Divorce papers.””
