Chapter 13: The Evidence They Never Expected
Victor’s confidence disappeared the moment Rachel lifted the flash drive.
It was only a small piece of plastic.
But in that moment, it felt heavier than every document in the storage unit.
Because Victor knew.
He knew Rachel wasn’t bluffing.
My father stepped closer.
“What’s on that drive?””
Rachel kept her eyes on Victor.
“Everything.””
Victor laughed, but it sounded forced.
“You expect us to believe that?””
Rachel didn’t move.
“I copied the original files before you and Denise changed them.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You stole company property.””
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“I protected evidence.””
My father looked at Victor.
“You knew.””
Victor sighed.
“Robert…”
“Don’t.””
My father’s voice was different.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Just done.
“You were my best friend.””
Victor looked away.
“And you used my trust.””
Victor stepped toward him.
“You’re making this personal.””
My father almost smiled.
“Personal?””
He pointed around the storage unit.
“You created files about my son.””
Victor said nothing.
“You tried to take my house.””
Still nothing.
“You helped my wife steal from me.””
Victor’s face tightened.
“Your wife made her own decisions.””
That sentence told us everything.
He was already trying to escape.
Trying to separate himself from Denise.
Rachel noticed too.
“Interesting.””
Victor looked at her.
“What?””
“You just admitted Denise stole from him.””
His eyes narrowed.
“I didn’t say that.””
“You did.””
Rachel smiled slightly.
“You’re already changing your story.””
Victor looked at the door.
And that was when my father realized something.
“He was never planning to stay and fight.””
I looked at Victor.
“What do you mean?””
My father pointed.
“Look at him.””
Victor wasn’t angry anymore.
He was calculating.
The same way Denise did.
Always thinking about the next move.
Victor reached into his pocket.
My body tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out his phone.
“I think you all need to see something.””
He pressed a button.
A video appeared.
It was Denise.
Sitting in a room.
Talking.
My stomach dropped.
“She’s recording a confession,” Victor said.
My father stared.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“Denise knew things might go wrong.””
The video played.
Denise’s voice filled the storage unit.
“I did what I had to do.””
My father froze.
The recording continued.
“I moved the money because Robert would never understand.””
I looked at Victor.
“Why are you showing us this?””
His smile faded.
“Because Denise planned to blame everything on me.””
The video continued.
“She thinks Victor is useful, but she doesn’t trust him.””
Victor stopped the recording.
“She was going to sacrifice me.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth was becoming stranger by the minute.
The people who betrayed us had also betrayed each other.
My father looked exhausted.
“So you recorded her.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victor shrugged.
“Insurance.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You’re all the same.””
Victor looked at her.
“What?””
“You collect secrets because you’re afraid of losing control.””
For the first time, Victor looked at her with anger.
“You don’t know anything.””
“No,” Rachel replied.
“But I know this.””
She held up the flash drive.
“You don’t have the only evidence.””
Victor stared at it.
“What else?””
Rachel smiled.
“The files you altered.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“The originals were saved automatically.””
My father looked at Rachel.
“You mean…”
“The system kept every version.””
Silence.
Victor looked furious.
“You copied everything?””
“Yes.””
“And where are those files?””
Rachel looked at him.
“Somewhere you can’t delete.””
The police were called that afternoon.
For the first time in months, my father wasn’t trying to prove he was innocent.
He was letting the truth speak.
Denise arrived while officers were reviewing the evidence.
The moment she saw Victor, she knew.
Everything had collapsed.
“You idiot,” she whispered.
Victor looked at her.
“You were going to blame me.””
“You ruined everything.””
I watched them turn on each other.
The same people who had worked together now stood there accusing each other.
My father looked at Denise.
“Was any of it real?””
She looked at him.
For a second, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said:
“I loved you.””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You loved what I could provide.””
Denise looked away.
And she didn’t deny it.
Later that evening, after everyone left, my father and I stood outside the house.
The same driveway where I had packed my car.
The same place where everything started.
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Dad.””
“I should have protected you.””
“You didn’t know.””
He looked toward the house.
“I trusted the wrong people.””
I nodded.
Then my phone buzzed.
A final message from Rachel.
*There’s one thing we haven’t found yet.*
I showed my father.
Another message appeared.
*The person who first helped Denise create the plan is still out there.*
I frowned.
“Who?””
A third message appeared.
And when I read the name, I felt my heart stop.
May you like
Because it was someone I never expected.
Someone who had been defending Denise from the beginning.
