Chapter 5: The Truth Behind The House

My father didn’t sleep that night.

Neither did I.

At six in the morning, he arrived at my apartment carrying a folder.

Not a small folder.

A thick one.

The kind that held years of secrets.

He placed it on my kitchen table.

“I checked everything.””

I poured him coffee.

“Tell me.””

He opened the folder.

“I trusted Denise with my finances after we got married.””

I sat across from him.

“She handled bills. Insurance. Tax documents.””

“Because you trusted her.””

He nodded.

“That was my mistake.””

Inside the folder were copies of bank statements.

Transfers.

Withdrawals.

Documents I didn’t understand.

But my father did.

He pointed at one page.

“Every few months, money disappeared.””

“How much?””

He looked away.

“More than I want to admit.””

I felt anger rising.

“Why didn’t you notice?””

His face tightened.

“I did notice some things.””

“Some things?””

“I thought it was mistakes.””

He tapped the papers.

“Small amounts. A few hundred here. A thousand there.””

“And you ignored it?””

He looked hurt.

“I believed my wife.””

That answer silenced me.

Because I understood.

The betrayal wasn’t just financial.

It was personal.

Denise wasn’t some stranger stealing from us.

She was someone my father welcomed into his life.

Someone he defended.

Someone he loved.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

The same unknown number.

*You need to find the original documents. Denise changed more than accounts.*

I showed my father.

He immediately stood up.

“Original documents?””

“What?””

“My mother’s inheritance paperwork.””

“Where is it?””

He looked toward the folder.

“That’s the problem.””

“What?””

“I can’t find it.””

The room went quiet.

My father searched through everything.

The folder.

The cabinet.

His office files.

Nothing.

Then he stopped.

“She had access.””

“Denise?””

He nodded.

I leaned back.

“This is insane.””

“No.””

My father’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“This is planned.””

That afternoon, we went back to his house.

I hadn’t expected to return so soon.

Walking through the front door felt strange.

It was the same place.

Same furniture.

Same pictures on the walls.

But everything looked different.

My father walked straight to his office.

I followed.

He opened drawers.

Checked shelves.

Looked behind cabinets.

Then he froze.

“What?””

He pointed.

A small scratch near the bottom drawer.

“This was locked.””

“Was?””

“I always kept important documents here.””

He pulled the drawer open.

The lock had been broken.

Inside were empty folders.

My father closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

A noise came from the hallway.

We turned.

Denise was standing there.

She wasn’t surprised to see us.

Actually, she looked prepared.

“You two are really doing this?””

My father stared at her.

“You broke into my office.””

She rolled her eyes.

“Your office?””

“Yes.””

“This is my house too.””

The anger in my father’s face was immediate.

“No. This is the house I bought before I met you.””

Denise’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

She had forgotten that.

My father stepped closer.

“Where are the documents?””

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

She laughed.

“You’re accusing your wife because your son is upset?””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

She was still trying to make herself the victim.

My father shook his head.

“You took from him.””

“I helped him.””

“You stole from him.””

Her eyes turned toward me.

“You’re really going to let him talk to me like that?””

I didn’t answer.

Because for the first time, I saw Denise clearly.

Not as my stepmother.

Not as my father’s wife.

As someone who had been controlling the story for years.

Then Ashley walked in.

She looked nervous.

“Mom.””

Denise turned.

“What?””

Ashley swallowed.

“I need to tell you something.””

The room went silent.

“What?”” Denise asked.

Ashley looked at my father.

Then at me.

“I found something in your closet.””

Denise’s face changed.

“What did you find?””

May you like

Ashley’s voice dropped.

“The paperwork you thought you hid.””
