Chapter 6: The Daughter Who Knew

Nobody moved.

For the first time since I had known Denise, she looked afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

My father looked at Ashley.

“What paperwork?””

Ashley hugged herself.

“I didn’t know what it was at first.””

Denise stepped forward.

“Ashley, don’t.””

But Ashley didn’t stop.

“I was looking for my passport last week.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Last week?””

She nodded.

“I opened Mom’s closet because I thought she put it there.””

My father’s voice became sharper.

“And?””

Ashley looked down.

“There was a box behind her clothes.””

Denise interrupted.

“You had no right to go through my things.””

My father turned toward her.

“You went through ours.””

The room went silent.

Ashley continued.

“I saw papers with Dad’s name on them.””

My father took a step closer.

“Where are they?””

“I moved them.””

Denise’s face went pale.

“You did what?””

Ashley looked at her mother.

“I was scared.””

For the first time, Ashley looked like someone who had been carrying guilt.

“I didn’t know what you were doing.””

Denise shook her head.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No, Mom.””

Ashley’s voice cracked.

“I think I made a mistake a long time ago.””

That sentence changed the entire room.

My father looked at her.

“Ashley, what are you saying?””

She wiped her eyes.

“I knew Marcus paid you money.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“You knew?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know it was wrong.””

“You heard her say Dad didn’t know.””

Ashley looked down.

“I thought you were just helping Mom.””

The anger I felt was hard to control.

“You watched this happen?””

“I’m sorry.””

The apology didn’t erase anything.

But it was the first honest thing anyone in that house had said.

Ashley pulled her phone out.

“I took pictures of the documents.””

Denise stepped forward.

“Give me that phone.””

“No.””

The word shocked everyone.

Ashley backed away.

“No, Mom.””

My father held out his hand.

“Ashley.””

She unlocked her phone and handed it to him.

He looked through the photos.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What is it?””

He handed me the phone.

The documents showed account transfers.

Legal paperwork.

And something else.

A signature.

My father’s signature.

Except he hadn’t signed it.

“What is this?””

His hands started shaking.

Denise looked away.

My father stared at her.

“You forged my name.””

She said nothing.

“Denise.””

Still nothing.

The silence was enough.

My father sat down.

For a moment, he looked older than I had ever seen him.

“What did you do?””

Denise finally spoke.

“You weren’t using the money.””

My jaw dropped.

“That’s your excuse?””

She looked at me.

“I kept this family together.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed it.””

She shook her head.

“No. You just don’t understand.””

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a set of keys.

And placed them on the table.

My father stared.

“What are those?””

Denise looked at him.

“The keys to the second house.””

I frowned.

“What second house?””

My father slowly stood.

“Denise…”

She smiled faintly.

A cold, confident smile.

“The house you think you own.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father looked at me.

And I knew from his face that there was one more secret.

A secret even Denise hadn’t admitted yet.

May you like

Because my father whispered:

“Marcus… I don’t think that house belongs to me anymore.””
