Chapter 12: The File With My Name

Nobody spoke.

My name was written across the box like a warning.

My father stared at it.

“I don’t understand.””

Rachel looked nervous.

“Open it.””

I reached for the box.

My hands felt heavier than they should have.

I opened the lid.

Inside were folders.

Not random papers.

Organized files.

Every page had my name.

School records.

Financial information.

Medical forms.

Employment history.

Everything.

My father picked up a document.

“She collected all this?””

Rachel nodded.

“Probably to understand your situation.””

“For what?””

Rachel looked at him.

“To find weaknesses.””

That word made me angry.

A person shouldn’t be a weakness.

A son shouldn’t be something someone studies to destroy.

I grabbed another folder.

Inside was a timeline.

Dates.

Notes.

Observations.

My stomach turned.

Someone had been tracking my life.

One page said:

*Marcus likely to return home after graduation. Financial pressure may create opportunity.*

I looked at my father.

“Opportunity?””

He looked sick.

“She planned this before I came home.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

Another page.

*Marcus needs to be removed from property claims.*

My father slammed the paper onto the box.

“She wanted my son gone.””

A sound came from the hallway.

We all froze.

Rachel looked toward the door.

“Did anyone follow us?””

My father closed the box.

“I don’t know.””

Then we heard footsteps.

Slow.

Approaching.

The door opened.

A man stood there.

Older.

Well dressed.

Confident.

I recognized him immediately.

Victor.

My father stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?””

Victor smiled.

“I could ask you the same thing.””

Rachel moved back.

Victor noticed her.

His expression changed.

“So you’re the reason things are falling apart.””

My father’s voice was cold.

“You ruined my family.””

Victor shook his head.

“No, Robert. Your family was already broken.””

I stepped forward.

“You stole from us.””

Victor looked at me.

“So you’re Marcus.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

Like he had known me for years.

Because he had.

“You were always the problem.””

My father moved between us.

“Leave.””

Victor laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

He looked around the storage unit.

“You think these papers matter?””

Rachel spoke.

“They prove fraud.””

Victor smiled.

“Do they?””

Nobody answered.

He continued.

“Because every document was signed.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Forged signatures.””

“Can you prove that?””

The confidence in his voice was terrifying.

He wasn’t worried.

Not at all.

Then he pulled out his phone.

“I was actually hoping you would find this.””

My father looked confused.

“What?””

Victor tapped the screen.

A recording started playing.

My father’s own voice filled the room.

“I agree that Denise should manage the assets…”

My father went pale.

“That’s not real.””

Victor smiled.

“It’s enough.””

I realized what he had done.

He had created fake evidence.

A recording.

A story.

A version where my father approved everything.

Victor stepped closer.

“You’re going to lose everything.””

My father stared at him.

“No.””

Victor tilted his head.

“No?””

My father looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

And something changed.

For the first time, he wasn’t afraid.

Because we finally understood the game.

Victor thought he controlled the evidence.

But he didn’t know one thing.

Rachel had been inside the system.

She knew where the real proof was.

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small flash drive.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

Rachel looked at him.

“You should have checked what I copied before you fired me.””

Victor’s face changed.

May you like

For the first time…

he looked scared.
