Chapter 7: The Groom’s Price
“Before you marry me, you need to know what your father promised me in exchange for helping him.””
Daniel's words seemed to suck all the air out of the bridal suite.
Emily stood in front of the dressing table, still wearing her wedding gown, while the bank investigator held the suspicious power-of-attorney document between two fingers.
My wife looked as though her knees might give out.
Michael, however, recovered first.
“Daniel, think very carefully about what you're saying,” he warned.
Daniel looked at him with disgust.
“No. I've spent six months doing exactly what you told me to do. I'm done thinking carefully about your lies.””
Emily took a step toward her fiancé.
“Daniel, what did my father promise you?””
He looked at her, and I saw genuine shame in his face.
“He promised me that after the wedding, we'd have enough money to buy a house together. He said your grandmother's inheritance would be invested in a property development project, and you'd be listed as a beneficiary.””
Emily stared at him.
“You knew about my inheritance?””
“I knew there was an account. Michael told me you had given him permission to manage it.””
“I never gave him permission!””
“I know that now.””
She recoiled as though he had struck her.
“You signed that document.””
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
Sarah made a strangled sound.
“You signed a power of attorney for Emily?””
“Michael told me it was a temporary authorization,” Daniel said.
“He said Emily had approved everything, but she was overwhelmed with wedding planning and didn't want to deal with the paperwork.””
I stepped forward.
“And you believed him?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I wanted to believe him. He said the investment would secure Emily's future. He said he was trying to make up for the years he missed.””
Michael slapped his palm against the doorframe.
“That's enough! You're twisting everything around.””
Daniel turned toward him.
“You told me James was financially controlling. You said he would never let Emily have independence as long as he controlled the wedding money.””
Michael's face reddened.
“And you agreed to help me.””
“Because you told me I was protecting Emily!””
“You were protecting yourself!””
The accusation landed hard.
Daniel flinched.
Emily looked between them, her bouquet forgotten on the dressing table.
“Did you agree to marry me because of my money?””
“No,” Daniel said immediately.
“Then why did you sign?””
He swallowed.
“Because I thought the investment was legitimate. And because Michael told me that if I helped him secure the property, he'd give us a share.””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“A share of my inheritance?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought you knew.””
She turned away.
I wanted to reach for her, but I stayed where I was. She needed to hear the truth without feeling that she had to choose sides again.
Robert Hayes, the bank investigator, cleared his throat.
“Mr. Carter, I need to ask you some questions about the document. Did you witness Emily signing this power of attorney?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you personally see her authorize anyone to manage the inheritance?””
“No. Michael told me she had approved it.””
Robert made a note.
“Then you understand why your signature may be relevant to the investigation.””
Daniel nodded.
“I do.””
Michael stepped toward Robert.
“This is ridiculous. Daniel made a mistake. Nobody stole anything. The money went into an investment.””
Robert remained calm.
“Sir, the bank has identified transactions that were not authorized by the account holder. Whether the funds were invested, transferred, or spent will need to be established through records.””
Michael pointed at me.
“Ask him about the money! He controls everything in this family. He paid for the wedding, and now he's using the bills to humiliate me.””
I finally answered.
“I didn't ask you to take Emily's inheritance. I didn't ask you to forge my signature on a refund request. And I certainly didn't ask you to put my wife's name on a document she says she never signed.””
Michael's expression twisted.
“You think you're some kind of hero because you raised another man's child?””
“No,” I said.
“I think I was her father because I stayed.””
Silence followed.
Emily pressed a hand against her mouth.
Michael glanced at her, perhaps expecting her to defend him.
She didn't.
Instead, she turned toward Daniel.
“Is there anything else?””
Daniel hesitated.
That hesitation told me there was.
“Daniel,” Emily said, her voice suddenly steady, “if you have something else to tell me, tell me now.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone.
“Two weeks ago, Michael sent me a message. He said the wedding was the last chance to complete the arrangement because afterward, you'd have access to the account records.””
Emily stared at him.
“What arrangement?””
Daniel unlocked his phone and showed her the message.
Once Emily is married, we'll move the remaining funds and finalize the property transfer. She'll never need to know the details.
Emily read it twice.
Then she looked at Michael.
“You were planning to move my money after the wedding?””
Michael shook his head.
“That message is being taken out of context.””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Then explain the next message.””
He swiped the screen.
The second message was shorter.
If James causes trouble, make sure Emily understands that the inheritance belongs to her biological family.
I watched my stepdaughter absorb those words.
Michael had not merely wanted to walk her down the aisle.
He had wanted the wedding to establish something in front of everyone: that he was the father, that he belonged, that he had a right to make decisions about her future.
And he had been willing to use her love for him to get it.
Emily slowly removed the engagement ring from her finger.
Daniel stared at her.
“Emily, please.””
She placed the ring on the dressing table.
“I can't marry someone who signed away my rights without even asking me.””
“I didn't sign away your rights. I thought I was helping.””
“You thought you were getting a house.””
He had no answer.
Her eyes filled again.
“I loved you, Daniel.””
“I love you, too.””
“Then why didn't you come to me?””
He looked down.
“Because I was afraid you'd say no.””
Emily gave a small, broken laugh.
“You were right.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Michael suddenly moved toward the hallway.
“I am not staying here to be insulted by a bunch of ungrateful people.””
Robert stepped aside but spoke firmly.
“Mr. Carter, please provide your current contact information before leaving. We may need to contact you as part of the bank's investigation.””
Michael ignored him and walked toward the exit.
Vanessa followed, calling his name.
He turned sharply.
“You stay out of this.””
She stopped.
For a moment, I thought she might let him leave.
Instead, she lifted her phone.
“I'm not protecting you anymore, Michael.””
His face went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Emily.
“It means I have the original messages, the property documents, and the bank transfer confirmations.””
Michael stared at her.
“You wouldn't dare.””
“I already sent copies to my attorney.””
He took another step toward her.
“You have no idea what you've done.””
Vanessa didn't move.
“No, Michael. For the first time, I know exactly what you've done.””
He turned and stormed out.
The hallway fell silent.
Emily stood beside the dressing table, her wedding dress spread around her like a cloud that had suddenly become too heavy to carry.
Then she looked at me.
“James?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Can you take me home?””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
But before we could leave, Robert's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds, then looked at the document again.
“Mr. Carter,” he said to me, “we've just received confirmation from the county records office.””
I turned.
“What confirmation?””
Robert's expression tightened.
“The power of attorney wasn't the only document filed six months ago.””
He paused.
“There's also a deed transferring ownership of the house where Michael has been living.””
Emily gripped my arm.
May you like
Robert looked directly at her.
“And the transfer was signed by someone who claimed to be you.””
