Chapter 2: The $47,380 Envelope

“Are you serious right now?””

Emily's voice echoed through the hallway.

She held the invoices against her chest, careful not to crush the delicate lace on her wedding dress.

I looked at her calmly.

“Every amount is listed there. The venue balance is $18,600. Catering is $9,400. The photographer, the band, the flowers, and the remaining arrangements make up the rest.””

She flipped through the papers with trembling fingers.

“But you promised to pay for everything!””

“I did.””

“Then why are you giving me bills ten minutes before my wedding?””

“Because ten minutes ago, you told me I wasn't your father.””

Her mouth fell open.

Michael stepped between us, wearing the offended expression of a man who had never been asked to pay for anything he wanted.

“This is ridiculous,” he said.

“You can't use money to punish a young woman on her wedding day.””

I looked at him.

“Then you can pay the bills.””

He blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“You're her real father, aren't you? The one she deserves to have beside her? The man whose presence matters more than sixteen years of showing up?””

I held out the final invoice.

“Here you go, Michael. The venue needs its balance before the ceremony. I'm sure you'll be happy to help your daughter.””

He didn't take it.

Instead, he shoved his hands into his pockets and glanced at the wedding coordinator standing nearby.

“Surely the venue can wait a few days.””

The coordinator, a woman named Patricia, checked her tablet.

“I'm afraid not, sir. Our contract requires the final balance before the ceremony begins. The venue has already made an exception because Mr. Carter paid the deposits in advance.””

Emily turned toward him.

“Dad, it's okay. James is just upset. You can help me with this, right?””

Michael's expression changed.

For a moment, he looked almost frightened.

Then he laughed.

“Sweetheart, I wasn't involved in the financial arrangements. Your stepfather insisted on handling everything.””

“I thought you said you were going to help with the wedding.””

“I said I'd be here for you.””

Emily stared at him.

“You told me you wanted to make up for lost time.””

“And I do.””

“Then help me!””

His jaw tightened.

“Don't raise your voice at me.””

The words struck her harder than a slap.

Emily took a step back.

I remembered another day, sixteen years earlier, when she had stood in our kitchen holding a drawing of a house with three stick figures in front of it.

One figure was tall and wore a blue shirt.

Another had long brown hair.

The smallest figure held both their hands.

She had looked up at me and asked, “Can you be my dad forever?””

I had knelt in front of her.

“If you'll let me, sweetheart.””

She had thrown her arms around my neck.

Now I watched that same little girl struggle to understand why the man she had chosen couldn't pay the bills for the wedding he had been invited to lead.

Sarah rushed forward.

“James, please. We can talk about this later.””

I looked at my wife.

“Later? When would you have told me that Emily was replacing me? After the ceremony?

After the photographs? After everyone had watched another man walk her down the aisle?””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you'd understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That she needed this.””

I stared at her for several seconds.

“What exactly did she need, Sarah? A father who abandoned her? Or a wedding day where she could humiliate the man who raised her without consequences?””

Sarah flinched.

Emily began crying.

“Stop it! Both of you! You're ruining everything!””

The wedding coordinator glanced at the clock.

“Emily, we need to make a decision about the final payment. The ceremony is scheduled to begin in six minutes.””

Emily looked at Michael again.

“Dad, please.””

He pulled her aside.

I couldn't hear every word, but I heard enough.

“Listen, sweetheart,” Michael whispered.

“I didn't bring that kind of money today. James has been paying all along. He can finish paying now, and we can discuss everything afterward.””

Emily shook her head.

“He won't.””

“Then tell him to stop being childish.””

“He's not childish!””

Michael's face hardened.

“Do you want me to walk you down that aisle or not?””

Emily froze.

He had found the one weapon he knew would work.

She looked toward me with tears running down her cheeks.

“James, please. I can't lose my wedding over money.””

I felt the old instinct rise inside me.

Fix it.

Make it better.

Protect her.

For sixteen years, I had answered every crisis with the same promise: I've got you, sweetheart.

But I had finally begun to understand something.

If I rescued her now, I wouldn't be saving her from a difficult situation.

I would be teaching her that she could discard me whenever someone more exciting came along, then demand that I clean up the mess.

“I won't stop the wedding,” I said.

“But I'm not paying the remaining balance.””

Emily's face crumpled.

“You can't do this to me!””

“I didn't create this situation, Emily.””

“You're supposed to be my father!””

I swallowed.

“That's what I thought, too.””

Silence fell over the hallway.

Then Michael let out a bitter laugh.

“Fine. Keep your money. Nobody needs your charity.””

He reached for Emily's hand.

“Come on, sweetheart. We'll figure something out.””

But before they could move, Patricia returned from the venue office with a printed document.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, her voice suddenly tense, “there's another issue.””

I took the paper.

It was a transfer confirmation.

My eyes moved across the page.

A refund request had been submitted the previous afternoon for $28,500 in wedding deposits.

The request included my name, my signature, and instructions to transfer the money to a different bank account.

I stared at the recipient's name.

Vanessa Reed.

Michael's girlfriend.

The woman Emily had never mentioned to me.

“Who authorized this?”” I asked.

Patricia swallowed.

“The request came from someone claiming to be your representative. Our accounting department noticed that the signature didn't match the one on your original contracts, so the transfer was placed on hold.””

Michael's face had gone pale.

I turned toward him.

“Why would your girlfriend be receiving my wedding money?””

He shook his head too quickly.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.””

Emily snatched the document from my hand.

“Dad, who's Vanessa?””

Michael reached for the paper.

“Give me that.””

Emily pulled it away.

“Why is her name on a refund from James's wedding account?””

“It's a misunderstanding.””

“Then explain it!””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And as Patricia hurried away to secure the paperwork, Sarah grabbed my wrist so tightly that her fingernails pressed into my skin.

“James,” she whispered, “there's another account.””

I turned toward her.

“What account?””

May you like

She looked at Emily, then at Michael.

“It's the one he used to send money to Vanessa. And Emily doesn't know where that money really came from.””
