Chapter 12: The Man Who Tried to Steal My Name

I stared at the bank record.

Michael hadn't merely tried to take Emily's inheritance.

He had attempted to gain access to an account connected to me.

And he'd done it by submitting a document claiming I had resigned as trustee.

“Can I see the supporting document?”” I asked Linda.

She nodded.

“I can provide a copy through the appropriate review process. Because this account is part of an estate arrangement, we'll need to verify your identity and consult our legal department before releasing certain records.””

“I understand.””

Emily leaned toward the page.

“Does this mean he tried to steal Dad's money, too?””

Linda chose her words carefully.

“It means someone submitted a request using a document that purports to transfer authority away from Mr. Carter. The bank rejected the request because the supporting documentation did not meet our verification requirements.””

I looked at the date again.

Three weeks earlier.

Michael had been back in Emily's life for months by then. He had met Daniel, attended family dinners, and talked about repairing the relationship he'd abandoned when Emily was seven.

All the while, he had been trying to gain access to an account I hadn't even known existed.

Sarah covered her mouth.

“He told me he was trying to protect Emily.””

I turned toward her.

“Sarah, I need you to understand something. Whatever Michael told you, he was making financial decisions behind everyone's back. You can't keep trusting him because he says he wants to help.””

She nodded, crying silently.

Emily held the letter from her grandmother against her chest.

“Why would Grandma put the account in your name, Dad?””

I looked at her.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

“But she trusted you.””

“She did.””

“And Michael tried to take it.””

“Apparently.””

Emily's face hardened.

“Then I want him stopped.””

For the first time that day, her anger felt different.

It wasn't the desperate anger of someone trying to force a broken relationship to work.

It was the clear anger of someone who finally understood that she had a right to protect herself.

Our attorney joined the meeting by phone. Linda explained the rejected request and arranged to provide the bank's records directly to him after the necessary verification.

The attorney listened carefully.

“James, don't contact Michael yourself. We need the original document, the submission records, and any communications that might establish who prepared it. If the signature is not yours, we'll discuss the appropriate next steps with the bank and the relevant authorities.””

“I agree.””

“And Emily should preserve the messages she received from Michael. Sarah should preserve hers, too. Nobody should delete anything, even if the messages are embarrassing.””

Emily nodded.

“I won't.””

Sarah looked down.

“I won't either.””

After the meeting, we sat in a quiet corner of the bank lobby while the attorney arranged the next steps.

Emily kept rereading her grandmother's letter.

“He saw me as a child,” she said softly.

“Michael saw an account number.””

I sat beside her.

“Maybe that's what he saw. But you don't have to let his choices define you.””

She looked at me.

“I was so desperate for him to love me that I ignored everything.””

“You wanted your father. That's not something you should be ashamed of.””

“But I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“Will you ever forgive me?””

I considered the question.

“Forgiveness isn't a switch, Emily. I can't promise that the hurt will disappear overnight. But I can tell you that I love you, and I'm willing to work through this with you.””

She leaned against my shoulder.

“That's more than I deserve.””

“No, sweetheart. You don't have to earn the right to be loved. But you do have to take responsibility for the way you treat people.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

Sarah sat across from us, twisting her wedding ring around her finger.

“I know I've lost your trust,” she said.

I looked at her.

“You've damaged it. Whether it can be rebuilt depends on what happens next.””

“I'll cooperate with the investigation. I'll tell the attorney everything I know.””

“Good.””

She wiped her eyes.

“And James, there's something else I need to tell you.””

I felt my shoulders tighten.

“What now?””

“When Michael first came back, he didn't contact Emily directly. He contacted me.””

Emily sat upright.

“What do you mean?””

Sarah took out her phone and searched through her messages.

“He sent me a message almost a year ago. He said he had important information about your grandmother's estate and wanted to meet.””

“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.

“Because he said the information involved something your grandmother had done before she died. He told me it would upset Emily if she learned about it before he could explain.””

Emily shook her head.

“You keep saying he told you things. Why did you believe him?””

Sarah looked exhausted.

“Because I thought he was trying to make things right. And because he said something that frightened me.””

“What?””

Sarah turned her phone toward us.

The message read:

Your mother left something behind that could change everything James believes about his role in Emily's life. We need to discuss it privately.

I stared at the screen.

“What did he mean by that?””

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't know. I asked him, but he said he would explain when we met.””

Emily looked at me.

“Dad, what could Grandma have meant?””

I couldn't answer.

My relationship with Emily had never depended on biology. I'd raised her because I loved her, and I'd never needed a document to tell me whether I was her father.

But Michael had spent the entire day using biology as a weapon.

If he believed there was something in her grandmother's estate that could undermine my place in Emily's life, I needed to know what it was.

Our attorney called again.

“I've reviewed the preliminary information from the bank,” he said.

“There's an additional issue we need to investigate. The purported trustee resignation wasn't the only document submitted in connection with this account.””

I closed my eyes.

“What else?””

“A beneficiary amendment was filed shortly before the access request. It appears to change the distribution instructions if the trustee becomes unable or unwilling to act.””

Emily gripped my arm.

“Who does it name as the replacement?””

The attorney paused.

“Michael Carter.””

Sarah let out a small cry.

I stared at the floor.

Michael had attempted to remove me from an account I hadn't known existed, then position himself to control the money if the bank accepted the paperwork.

“What happens now?”” I asked.

“We preserve the records, challenge any unauthorized amendments, and determine whether the documents were forged. I'll contact the bank's legal department and arrange the appropriate filings.””

When the call ended, Emily looked at me.

“I don't want him near our family again.””

I took her hand.

“Then we set boundaries, and we let the investigation establish what happened.””

She nodded.

We left the bank just after sunset.

The sky above Nashville had turned a deep shade of purple, and the first lights were coming on along the street.

For the first time all day, the world looked ordinary.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

“James Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rebecca Shaw. I'm calling from the office of the attorney who drafted your mother-in-law's estate documents.””

I stopped walking.

“How can I help you?””

“Your mother-in-law left specific instructions concerning the trust connected to Emily's inheritance. We received a request today asking for the original agreement.””

“Who submitted it?””

“A man identifying himself as Michael Carter.””

I looked at Emily.

Rebecca continued.

“We refused to release the documents without verification. But there's something in the original agreement you should know before you decide how to proceed.””

“What is it?””

She paused.

“Your mother-in-law included a clause stating that if anyone attempted to gain control of the trust through a forged document, the entire estate arrangement would be reviewed.””

I felt a chill run through me.

“What would that mean?””

“It means the person who tried to obtain control may have triggered a legal review that could affect every beneficiary listed in the agreement.””

Emily took my arm.

“Dad, what's happening?””

I raised one finger, asking her to wait.

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“There's also a sealed statement attached to the original trust documents. Your mother-in-law instructed us to release it only if Michael Carter ever challenged James Carter's authority.””

I stopped breathing for a moment.

“What does the statement say?””

“We haven't opened it. But the instructions are very clear.””

I looked at Emily, then at Sarah.

Rebecca continued.

“Mr. Carter, your mother-in-law anticipated that this exact dispute might happen. And according to her written instructions, the person who ultimately decides what happens to the trust is not you, Michael, or Sarah.””

“Who is it?””

“Emily.””

My stepdaughter stared at me.

Rebecca's final words changed everything.

“Your mother-in-law left Emily the authority to remove any trustee who violated her wishes. And if she exercises that authority, the trust's assets will be distributed according to a separate set of instructions we have not yet disclosed.””

Emily slowly straightened.

For the first time since the wedding began, she didn't look frightened.

She looked determined.

“Then let's open the agreement,” she said.

But before Rebecca could schedule the meeting, another message arrived on my phone.

It was from Michael.

*You think you've won because you found the account. Ask Sarah what happened the night your mother-in-law died. Then ask Emily why her grandmother changed the trust at the last minute.*

I stared at the message.

Sarah began trembling.

Emily looked from her mother to me.

“What happened that night?””

Sarah's lips parted.

And then she whispered the one thing I had never expected to hear.

“Your grandmother didn't change the trust because she was afraid Michael would steal the money.””

May you like

She looked directly at Emily.

“She changed it because she discovered who your biological father really was.””
