Chapter 13: The Secret My Daughter's Grandmother Took to Her Grave

For several seconds, Sarah's words made no sense.

Emily stood beneath the streetlight outside the bank, clutching her grandmother's letter against her chest.

“What do you mean, Grandma discovered who my biological father really was?”” she asked.

Sarah looked toward the road.

“I mean she discovered something about Michael that made her question everything he'd told us.””

“Mom, Michael is my biological father. We've known that since I was seven.””

“Yes, sweetheart. But your grandmother believed he had been lying about something much more important.””

I stepped between them, trying to keep my voice steady.

“Sarah, stop speaking in riddles. What did she discover?””

Sarah swallowed.

“Three days before she died, your grandmother called me to the hospital. She asked me to bring the folder she'd kept in her bedroom safe. Inside were copies of financial records, letters, and an old photograph.””

“What photograph?”” Emily asked.

“One of Michael.””

Sarah unlocked her phone and opened a photograph of a faded document.

It showed Michael standing outside a small office building, shaking hands with an older man. Behind them was a sign for a financial services company that had closed years earlier.

Emily frowned.

“What's this supposed to prove?””

“Your grandmother discovered that Michael had been involved in a financial dispute involving several families,” Sarah explained.

“He had borrowed money from people, promised to invest it, and then disappeared when they demanded repayment.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“That explains why he left,” I said.

“Not entirely.”” Sarah looked at Emily.

“Your grandmother believed he'd come back because he had learned about your inheritance. She was afraid he would use his relationship with you to gain access to the money.””

Emily stared at her.

“Then why didn't Grandma tell me?””

“She wanted to protect you. She thought you were too young to understand what was happening, and she believed the trust would keep the money safe until you were older.””

I shook my head.

“Sarah, that's still not the secret you said she discovered about Emily's biological father.””

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

“No. There's another part.””

She turned toward Emily.

“Your grandmother had reason to believe Michael wasn't the only person who knew about the inheritance. She found a letter from someone who claimed to have helped him access financial records he shouldn't have been able to obtain.””

“Who?”” Emily asked.

Sarah hesitated.

Then she said a name.

“Vanessa Reed.””

Emily looked stunned.

“Michael's girlfriend?””

“She wasn't his girlfriend at the time. She worked for a company that handled property transactions. Your grandmother believed Vanessa had helped Michael locate assets connected to several people he'd borrowed money from.””

I remembered Vanessa standing outside the bridal suite, admitting that money had entered her account. She had seemed frightened, but fear didn't prove innocence.

“Did your mother-in-law have evidence?”” I asked.

Sarah nodded.

“She had copies of emails. She told me that if Michael ever returned, I should contact the attorney who prepared the trust documents. She specifically told me not to confront him alone.””

“And you did the opposite,” I said.

Sarah lowered her head.

“Yes.””

Emily turned away.

“I can't believe this. Everyone knew something about my life except me.””

I reached for her hand.

“You know what matters now, sweetheart? We have a chance to find out the truth.””

She squeezed my fingers.

Then she looked at Sarah.

“Is there anything else?””

Sarah hesitated.

That hesitation was becoming painfully familiar.

“Mom.””

“I found another letter after your grandmother died. It was addressed to her attorney, not to me.””

“Where is it?””

“I gave it to Michael.””

Emily stepped back.

“You did what?””

“He told me it was about an old debt. He said he needed it to clear his name before he could become part of your life again.””

“You gave him Grandma's letter?””

“I thought I was helping him resolve something from his past.””

Emily's voice rose.

“You gave him the one thing Grandma specifically told you to protect?””

Sarah began crying.

“I know what I did.””

“No, I don't think you do!””

Emily's hands trembled.

“You keep telling me you wanted to protect me, but every time you had a choice, you protected Michael instead.””

Sarah didn't argue.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that an apology could not erase a pattern of decisions.

My phone rang again.

Rebecca Shaw, the attorney who had prepared the trust documents, was calling back.

I answered and put her on speaker.

“James, I've reviewed the original instructions left by Emily's grandmother. I think you should come to my office tomorrow morning. There's a sealed statement that needs to be opened in Emily's presence.””

“Can you tell us what it concerns?””

“I can tell you it concerns the circumstances under which the trust was created. I cannot interpret it without reviewing the complete document.””

Emily leaned toward the phone.

“Ms. Shaw, my grandmother wrote that I have the authority to remove a trustee who violates her wishes. Is that true?””

“According to the preliminary records, yes, subject to the terms of the trust and applicable law.””

“Then I want the documents reviewed as soon as possible.””

“Tomorrow morning would be best. Please bring every document you have received, including the messages from Michael.””

After the call ended, Emily looked at me.

“I want to know everything, Dad. Even if it hurts.””

I nodded.

“Then we'll find out everything.””

That evening, I took Emily home while Sarah went to stay with her sister.

The house felt strange without the wedding preparations, the flowers, and the constant stream of phone calls. Emily sat at the kitchen table in her blue outfit while I made tea.

She stared at the yellow roses I'd brought home from the venue.

“I used to think family meant people who shared your blood,” she said.

I placed a mug in front of her.

“Sometimes people teach us the opposite.””

She looked up.

“Do you think Grandma knew you'd become my father?””

“I think she knew I loved you.””

Emily smiled faintly.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

*I need to speak with you before tomorrow's meeting. There's something about Michael's past that he never told you.*

Emily read it aloud.

I took a slow breath.

“Ask her to meet us somewhere public, and don't go alone.””

Emily typed a reply.

Within seconds, Vanessa responded with an address and a time.

Then another message arrived.

*Bring James. He needs to hear this, too.*

I looked at the address.

It was the same property Michael had purchased using money connected to Emily's inheritance.

May you like

And beneath the address was one final sentence.

*The man Michael called his enemy for sixteen years wasn't the person he was afraid of.*
