Chapter 9: Clara’s Final Warning

We moved Clara and Noah to a private medical facility outside the city.

No one knew the location.

Not my mother.

Not Victor.

Not even most of my security team.

Only Marcus and two trusted guards had access.

For the first time since everything started, I felt like I had control.

But Clara didn’t.

She sat by the window holding Noah.

Watching him sleep.

“You’re scared.””

I sat beside her.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“I thought you would say you weren’t.””

“I’m done pretending everything is fine.””

A small, sad smile appeared on her face.

“That’s what I needed from you.””

I looked down.

“I should have listened sooner.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I saw what I wanted to see.””

She was quiet.

Then she said:

“There’s something I never told you.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

“The night before you came home…”

She looked at Noah.

“I heard Evelyn talking to Victor.””

“What did they say?””

Clara took a deep breath.

“They were talking about a meeting.””

“With who?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked frightened.

“But I heard one name.””

I waited.

“Your father’s.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“No, Clara. My father has been dead for years.””

She nodded.

“But Evelyn said, ‘Daniel will never know what his father planned.’”

I felt a chill.

“What else?””

“She said, ‘Once the baby is protected, everything returns to us.’”

Protected.

That word stayed in my mind.

“What does she mean by protected?””

Clara shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then Noah moved slightly.

Both of us looked at him.

For a moment, everything was quiet.

Just a father and mother watching their child sleep.

Then Marcus entered.

His face told me something was wrong.

“What happened?””

He handed me a tablet.

“We found the missing piece.””

I looked at the screen.

A scanned document.

An old document.

My father’s signature was at the bottom.

“What is it?””

Marcus answered:

“A private adoption agreement.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Clara looked confused.

“Daniel?””

I kept reading.

The document was dated three years before Noah was born.

Impossible.

Then I saw the name.

Not mine.

Not Clara’s.

Another name.

A child.

My hands went cold.

“Marcus…”

“Yes, sir?””

“Find out everything about this person.””

He looked at the document.

Then at me.

“Sir…”

“What?””

Marcus hesitated.

“The child listed here…”

He pointed at the page.

“Was never supposed to exist.””

I stared at the name.

And then my phone received a message.

One sentence.

May you like

From my mother.

*You finally found the truth. Now ask yourself why your father hid it from you.*
