Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Left Behind
The man waiting in the hospital conference room looked nothing like the attorney I remembered from my childhood.
Richard Hayes had aged.
His hair was almost completely gray now.
His shoulders were thinner.
But his eyes were the same.
Sharp.
Focused.
Like he had been carrying a secret for years.
When I walked in, he immediately stood.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
“Why are you here?””
Richard looked past me toward the hallway.
“Because I heard what happened to Clara.””
My expression hardened.
“And how exactly did you hear about that?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the first thing that bothered me.
“Richard.””
He sighed.
“Your father asked me to protect something.””
I stared at him.
“My father has been dead for five years.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you still protecting anything?””
Richard slowly placed a file on the table.
“Because I failed him.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is this?””
“Everything your mother has been trying to hide.””
My stomach tightened.
I opened the file.
Inside were copies of documents.
Trust agreements.
Private letters.
Medical records.
And one handwritten note from my father.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
My fingers froze.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that made me believe I could no longer protect you myself.*
I swallowed.
Richard watched me silently.
I continued reading.
*Your mother loves control more than she loves people. I ignored the signs for too long. Do not make the same mistake.*
I looked up.
“What did he know?””
Richard sat down.
“Your father discovered Evelyn was moving company assets without approval.””
I frowned.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“It wasn’t theft,” Richard explained.
“Not exactly.””
“What does that mean?””
“She created a network of private accounts. She moved money through family trusts and shell companies.””
I stared at the documents.
“And my father stopped her?””
“He tried.””
“What happened?””
Richard looked down.
“He was preparing to remove her from all financial decisions.””
The room became silent.
Then I understood.
“She knew.””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother knew your father was going to change everything.””
My voice lowered.
“So she waited.””
“Yes.””
“She waited until after he died.””
Richard didn’t respond.
He didn’t need to.
My father’s warning suddenly felt different.
Not like paranoia.
Like a final attempt to save me.
“But what does this have to do with Noah?””
Richard pointed at one document.
“Your father created a succession clause.””
I read the page.
“If Daniel Carter is unable to maintain control due to legal incapacity, guardianship disputes, or family intervention…”
I stopped.
“Family intervention.””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother has been building a situation where you appear unstable.””
My heart sank.
“She wanted to create chaos.””
“Yes.””
“Then use the chaos to take control.””
“Yes.””
I closed the file.
“But she doesn’t have enough.””
Richard looked at me.
“She needed one final piece.””
“What piece?””
“A reason everyone would believe Clara was incapable of caring for Noah.””
My hands tightened.
“She almost killed my wife to create that reason.””
Richard didn’t disagree.
The silence said enough.
My phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
“What happened?””
His voice was urgent.
“Sir, we found something from the hospital cameras.””
“What?””
“There was someone else with Evelyn the night she took Noah.””
I stood.
“Who?””
A pause.
Then:
“Victor.””
My blood ran cold.
“Where are they now?””
“Victor disappeared two hours ago.””
“And Evelyn?””
Another pause.
“She left the hospital.””
I looked at Richard.
The timing was too perfect.
They knew we were getting close.
Then Marcus said something else.
“Sir, there’s one more thing.””
“What?””
“We checked the nursery footage from your house.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“And?””
“Your mother wasn’t the only person who entered.””
My heart stopped.
“Who else?””
May you like
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.””
